great write up!! got our KF for Christmas, but the wife and daughter use it the most, need to get my hands on that thing! LOL
Thank you so much for this Noob Guide !!!!
I have only recently acquired Android devices (HTC Sensation & Nook Tablet 16GB) and was only looking at threads in the Kindle section as a friend of mine recently purchased the Kindle Fire.
Correct me if I'm wrong but a lot of the information in this guide holds trues for other Android devices, does it not?
I'm still trying to digest the information, but one thing that really confuses me is sequence of events/tasks that need to be carried out in order to pimp the Android device. For instance....
1) It seems I should back up stock device image, but is this done before rooting or after. Also Is backing up the image include the Android OS AND Bootloader, and what else?
2) Once back up is done, is the next step to Root the device
3) Once rooted, do you then install a new bootloader?
4) Is the custom Rom installed after the Bootloader?
5) When do you install the many different utilities that are mentioned.?
6) What app packages should be installed?
7) When should a backup be made of the NEW pimped device?
8) How and when should a restore be done back to stock or the pimped image?
9) What sequence of steps should be taken to load a new version of a Rom or a totally different Rom?
I hope to educate myself with all these questions and hopefully start work on pimping the HTC Sensation and then the Nook Tablet.
Thanks again for this great thread. This should be posted in every section of the forum.
Thanks for reading. I don't have specific experience with either of those devices. Since they are all android devices, many of the topics discussed in this guide will overlap. However, this guide is specifically written for Kindle Fire users, so I'm sure you will find that not everything will apply to them and they will have their own particular way of doing things. I suggest asking many of your questions on those forums to get the appropriate answers.
root - install fff and a recovery (twrp or cwm) - in recovery you can clear dalvik cache
Thanks. I will read up guides for the other devices. It looks like I will be helping my friend with the Kindle modding, so I was wondering if you could address my questions with Kindle Fire as the device being modded. Thanks in advance.
What's the latest as far as streaming to a rooted device goes? Is there an easy fix?
kinfauns, this is not merely useful, it's a thoughtful, literate gift to this site. You clearly have a talent in this regards and I (and no doubt many others) certainly encourage you to create more tutorials like this. What's more, your manner here and in these responses is really admirably gracious. Add another thank you to the growing list, and please, by all means keep going if you're of a mind to.
THANKS for this guide. It pretty much answers my questions as far as root or not root. I definitely want to keep Kindle services intact but I'd like to get Google Play as well.
