Unfortunately I have the Rogers version
i'm having a real hard time rooting my tab. I have a rogers galaxy tab i957R, i tried method one several times with no success, weird cause its very straight forward and method two doesnt seem to work either. Superuser is installed and i can open it but apps that require root cant access it. checked android terminal with the SU command and nothing. I flashed the danno 2.0 rom, think i will restock. I made a backup right after installing CWM from the first post, will restock and try again.
Anyone else had a hard time rooting??
BTW I'm surprised that there isnt more development on this tab i thought there was alot of people that own one. Im surprised people arent buying these tabs like hot cakes. There are dozens of craigslist and kijiji ads selling these for about 350. The tabs a great deal with LTE and the processing power is pretty good, i own a nexus seven and you can say what you wanna say and throw your (mostly pointless) benchmarks at it but there is very little noticable differences. Just my two cents, figured more devs would have got their hands on them. But im happy with the ICS release. Just gotta retry this darn rooting.
I was expecting to run into trouble when I decided to root my new i 957 (ATT) but I didn't expect it to happen so early in the process. I have downloaded Odin 1.85 (shows up when I click on it) I've downloaded both the http://ponack.net/TPC/dagnarf/sgh-i9...-kernel-v2.tar and the CWM Recovery and have them in my download folder. The next step is where I hit the roadblock. I try to place the tar file in the PDA slot and it won't go there. I've tried extracting the tar file and just putting the image file in the PDA slot and it won't go there. I then tried to see if it would work with the CWM download, and it wouldn't go there.
I know I'm going to feel very foolish (if and when anyone can help me figure this out) because after so many have used this process for rooting, I'm sure it must be something really easy that I have neglected to do.
Another, less important problem is that I keep getting an ATT message on my display panel asking me to insert a SIM card. I will never use this tab as a phone and I will not activate for data with ATT. If I ever figure out how to root and install a different ROM will the ATT message go away?
Do I need to do an unlock?
I would really appreciate any help anyone might have to offer. (I'm very anxious to start playing with this tablet.!)
TIA
Hi everyone, I am new to the entire Android rooting business, and was looking to install Jelly Bean on my i957r Tab. Reading through this thread , it seems people are having trouble rooting the Rogers version of this tablet. I was just wondering if anyone out there has successfully rooted, and if so, what method was used.
Thanks!

Hi, I have the 8.9 galaxy tab lte from bell running the new stock ICS and I cannot find a root package that works for it. I have tried the old modded kernel by Da_G that was used for the tablet running gingerbread, but it won't get past the loading screen after I apply root and restart. I have searched all the forums and have found nothing for this version of 8.9 tab, so I am finally asking.
That kernel is a honeycomb kernel, and wont work for ICS.
I need to go through all of these threads and update the OP.
This seems to be the last word on rooting a Galaxy Tab 8.9 i957 (Telus), is it possible to root my device?
Thx

Orlando, will your method 1 work for the new ics, or is there a different superuser that needs to be used?

With the same superuser?

Changes in this kernel:
ADB Insecure (gives you # root prompt at adb instead of $)
su, busybox added to ramdisk
script to install busybox and su at boot-up
init.d support for running init.d scripts at bootup
stock android bootanimation (so you can run custom boot anims)
Do we have a zip version of kernel to flash though CWM laying around somewhere?
I F'ed up and flashed the wrong CWM and now have soft brick trying to root my i957. Is there a stock rom I can flash back to through odin? I've been searching high and low. Google also isn't my friend on this one. I'm stuck at a firmware upgrad encounterd an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again. But it's not even recognised in Kies at all to do any level of an restore. But the tab is seen in odin on com3. PM any info as I'm heading home from work if there's any useful help for my du-mass moment of the day.
