I´ ve got a similar problem:
On the first install (most recent image from OP) it stucks at Kernel boot (E:format_volume: no mtd partition "datadata") - when I pull the battery and wipe all partitions again (system/data/cache) and install it again it boots but I can´t do anything - the touchscreen does not recognize any input - the only thing I can do is pressing the power button -> the screen gets darker (not off but darker)
Hope we can fix this

It seems like you forgot to flash the most recent kernel? Or did you flash the rom + kernel? Without the proper kernel, you will not be able to do a lot...
The most recent Kernel is in the most recent ROM image.... isn´t it?
No. Pls. read the first post! The most recent Kernel is in the most recent ROM image.... isn´t it?
Ok I know its a stupid question but - can I flash to test it? Is it safe/unsafe in any way? Thanks for all the hard work to make our SGS better!
So did I but today there are some major changes to the newest version of the kernal that completely remove /datadata/ causing the restore no not work as directly as before.

Noooo I dont want to wait! LOL Just cant wait for ICS for SGS. I think I will take my chance and flash it. Anything I need before or just flash it from recovery same as any other custom ROM and post any comments I will have?
