Use a root file explorer to do process. I used ES File Explorer.

Mount system R/W.
Navigate to device folders.
Open "etc" folder.
Open "snd_soc_msm" folder.
Open file "snd_soc_msm_2x" file with editor.
Look for the following section below, it is at 41% using ES editor.

SectionDevice
Name "Speaker"
Comment "Speaker Rx device"

EnableSequence
'PRI_RX Channels':0:Two
'RX5 MIX1 INP1':0:RX1
'RX5 MIX1 INP2':0:RX2
'RX6 DSM MUX':0:DSM_INV
'LINEOUT2 Volume':1:100%
'LINEOUT4 Volume':1:100%
'RX5 Digital Volume':1:65%
EndSequence

The exact line you want to edit is
'RX5 Digital Volume':1:65%

Only change the percentage amount, and only change it in small increments.

I only needed to set mine to 70% to get the extra volume I needed, anything above that gets really distorted.

Be sure to mount the system back to R/O.

Reboot and the volume change will take effect.

Hit thanks if I have helped.
Also if anyone has any questions just PM me.

I've always had wicked low call volume on anything cm10 based. I even managed to find in call volume in that file and give that a boost too. Now I need to turn it down a notch to keep my eardrum intact. Thanks!

FINALLY!!!

Hey eheinzeiii...been looking to increase volume for ages, tried all the apps that "supposedly" would do it...they never did...but THIS DOES WORK!

And I'm probably on the lower rungs of knowing how to code or change stuff thats not specifically in some setting in a menu...had no clue what mount r/w meant, heh...(but i figured it out)... and I'll tell you...70% is loud son! I may back it down to 68 or so.

This is like the 2nd time I've ever posted on XDA, your tip definitely needed some applause.

Have a good one and thanks again!

(updated: Just looked and its the 1st time I've ever posted)

slim bean build 8 this just gets me stuck at the boot screen after rebooting, warning other users, no idea why but i even tried clearing cache and dalvik after it looped the first time, it comes up with app optimization screen and says starting apps but then freezes there instead...

Most likely user error in this case ;).

Nice post. No where to increase recording volume/gain in there huh? Haha that would be too easy.

Just to be sure... This is only for external speaker volume?... Or does this affect headset volume as well?

I already use root browser & root explorer I can explore system files but no snd_soc_msm folder or anything :(, any Idea? thanx

Seconded. Just a guess, but maybe the file is different in the new nightlies? Running 10.2-20130823-NIGHTLY-i9300 here.

Here's the path to my sound config file:

Device folders
system
etc
sound

Then I've got 2 files: m0 and silence.wav

I've copied my m0 file to docs dot google dot com file/d/0BwFu-RCO2AIYQVFtWkhEbGI0Uzg/edit?usp=sharing so you can see the contents. Got there using modified 10.1 instructions posted at topic slash 73393-low-headphone-volume-using-nightlies (haven't earned my link sharing ability yet).

The relevant bit of code is:

Code:
</path>
<device name="speaker">
   <path name="on">
       <ctl name="SPK Switch" val="1"/>
       <ctl name="AIF1DAC1 Volume" val="96"/>
       <ctl name="AIF1 Boost Volume" val="0"/>
       <ctl name="DAC1 Volume" val="96"/>
       <ctl name="Left Output Mixer DAC Volume" val="7"/>
       <ctl name="Right Output Mixer DAC Volume" val="7"/>
       <ctl name="SPKL DAC1 Volume" val="1"/>
       <ctl name="SPKR DAC1 Volume" val="1"/>
       <ctl name="Speaker Mixer Volume" val="3"/>
       <ctl name="Speaker Boost Volume" val="7"/>
       <ctl name="Speaker Volume" val="63"/>

That last line there, set at 63, had originally been set at 57, and the Speaker Boost Volume on the previous line had originally been set at 4 however I still haven't heard a boost in volume in the audiobook I've been playing all throughout the process so I'm still looking for suggestions. (I've been hitting the volume up key after each one too to check that the UI slider is set at max.)

I am running the 8-24 PACman rom. I have the file there. Follow the instructions.... /ect/snd_soc_msm/snd_soc_msm_2x is there. Don't go into your "sound" folder. If you do, your in the wrong place and wont find it.

Here is a screenshot using root explorer.

Thanks, I get the importance of following instructions. Sorry - I should have been clearer. There is no snd_soc_msm folder within the system/etc folder - this might be one of the differences between CM10.2 for the Version S3 variant and the others (you can see from my build version above I'm I9300)? Admittedly I've just realised I arrived at this thread by searching for the problem and didn't notice I was in a different subforum.

Does anyone know if that's a possible explanation?

Here's a pair of screenshots of the folders in system/etc using ES File Explorer with r/w root access:

This mod is for the American s3 devices, it won't work with the 9300 you have a completely different processor and sound chip.

Can you add a bit more detail on what each item in SectionDevice tweaks?

What speakers does this tweak? What are OUTPUT 2 & OUTPUT 4? Does Rx5 tweak system wide based on volume settings?

    Hello all. I am truly sorry I can not help out more. As I know that a lot of people want that little bit of extra sound. But I'm not a developer, I'm just a guy who did a ton of reading and trial and error and this is what worked for me. I run all the most recent nightly Carbon ROMs on my GS3.

    This worked like a charm. My device is International Galaxy S3. I was about to move away from CM10.2 as I was not happy with the vibration strength and the speaker volume. But I made the change here for the volume, and I'm going to stay with the ROM. :) Thanks again. :)

    If you guys are not able to find the folder or the file specified here, and instead see the /etc/sound folder, get inside and edit the m0 file there. Go to 41% in ES File Explorer, as mentioned in the thread, and you will find the volume set to 57 there. Change it to 63, reboot. I was surprised to see it work. :)

    It does work for i9300. For i9300 International, there's no "snd_soc_msm" folder and "snd_soc_msm_2x" . You need to modify this file /etc/sound/m0. I use RB Text Editor (ROM Toolbox).

    Find <device name = "speaker"> then modify <ctl name="Speaker Volume" val="57"/> ; 57 is the default value, I changed my to 63 at first but too loud that it distort the sound at full volume. I settled for val=59 but you can experiment to see what suit you.

    If you want to increase earpiece and headphone volumes too, find the specific <device name = "headphone"> or earpiece, then modify <ctl name="Output Volume" val="57"/>.

    This work for my S3 on SlimROM with slim-4.3.build.1-OFFICIAL-878.
