Check that on dev. stratosk's thread. I've flashed it last year on my wife's i9000 but I don't remember if I had to root it before. I'm sure it is written in the thread.
It is actually amazing root kernel that features also CWM recovery. Maybe you just need to flash the kernel and have all-in: root, custom recovery as well as great working phone. It must be written in the topic, or check also what is writen for your baseband/firmware directly on developer's website: www.semaphore.gr
If you root first (before flashing new kernel) you can backup your stock kernel with SGS kernel flasher free app from the play store before flashing Semaphore.
Also backup your efs/IMEI No as soon as you have root access. There is easy run order to be entered in free app Terminal Emulator (by Jack Palevich) from Play Store, and efs folder gets saved as tar file, which can be also easily restored if it goes wrong. You can find easily xda topic about how to do it.
Occasionally, IMEI No gets sometimes just lost after some flashing. If backup has been done, one can easily restore it if it happens. Otherwise it could be a headache.
There is also an app for managing Semaphore kernel. Amazing, life work of the developer "stratosk". If you use it and like it, consider donating him some small amount, it is a nice gesture for huge, priceless work invested.... (I do it for all apps, roms and kernels I use) except if you're really on tight budget
Once all is done and you've made nice settings, choosen wallpaper and all else, make nandroid backup of your system. It is very worth to have it saved....
Let know if it worked well
