To all of you owning or like to buy a MTK based device!

To get proper source there must be prressure to companies manufacturing these devices. Since they are located mostly in china there can not be much done there.
BUT .... also dealer and distributors are bound to laws and have to respect the gpl. Especially in EU.
SO ... if you find a dealer / distributor who sell those devices, please mail them friendly about the source code. of course most of them will not reply or dont understand what you want.
THEN contact your local FSF chapter http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-violation/ and http://gpl-violations.org/ and report the dealer and the brand/device which no source is available.
They take legal action about it!
At the end the vendor have to choose. selling devices in EU and release source or these devices get banned sooner or later. This will take some months! its a long shot but this is the only one!

SO ITS ON YOU! DO IT!

I already made alot of work on that !

- I sent an letter to ANACON (The Portuguese ISP Comp, that deals with this matters).

- Also emailed Mediatek and four brands about it, looks like Sony re-read my email and did what i asked!
Told them, the sources where incompleted, and they should compile an kernel from their own sources, now they released an public statement, that they will add the rest of the sources, it's good news but sadly this is ONLY for the MT6589.

Sony, in the smartphone area, has from what I know a good record in regards to respecting open source licenses. Let's see what comes.

Also, today I noticed the Fairphone which aims to be so politically and socially correct, uses the MTK 6589 SoC but there doesn't appear to be any kind of source code released (however, I found a blog post from July that says they are "working on it").

I find this funny (and i say funny, not to be rude...)
Lenovo / ZTE / where just two of the comp. that promise to release source code for the MT6577.... 1 year later...... sources still incompleted....

I really wish Sony can break "the wall" of Mediatek's Closed Source in this new SoC.

I will be (partially) happy !

Oppo is also a promosing manufacturer wich could make the mt6589 source true since they are making a mt6589 based device, and also released the source of their Find 5, wich is quite a success and has full XDA support, including a lot of custom roms..
I've mailed them about it already, if they will release the sources, like with the Find 5.
If the Oppo gets support, and custom roms, it will be quite easy to port to any mt6589 device, so building with the required source isn't even needed.

Find 5 is different though, being Qualcomm based, who is somewhat more open source friendly than Mediatek. It's good though to keep up the pressure, once one company breaks the rest will probably follow.

Cyanogenmod on a MTK device would be a dream. No more being scared of not getting updates! (Until the next version of android makes those sources obsolete)

It's an nightmare for me... lol
Already compiled CM (9) ICS based since it's the best sources around for the mt6577 ...
So many bugs/errors, and still issing files (eg: mediatek/build/kernel/Makefile)when i fixed 1, two new errors came out.. zzzz.

Indeed.
And you need mediateks API For dual-sim functionality aswell, otherwise you wouldn't get dualsim on any custom rom.

So the hope is on Sony and Oppo.

That's true, but i highly doubt that some of us are using Dual-SIMs. I have made a couple ROMs without the SIM2 functionality, and i haven't got any complaints about it.

Well I know some people who buy a china-phone for that reason; so they don't have to walk with 2 phones, because they have 1 simcard for work, and 1 for private use.

Hey guys, We are going to try something new for our china phones - cyanogenmod.

But we need some more devs to get everything going.

    For now we have:

-Github tree for Lenovo P700i(mediatek 6577, android 4.0.4, kernel 3.0.8)

-Lens_flare - original port author(may work with system folder and configs)

-some kernel source from other devices like liquid gallant

The main problem is getting adb to work that could help a lot on remaining development. For now even zygote not starting, but all partitions seems mounted successfully.

We need more devs (especially that could assemble working kernel for device), working with p700i may lead to following porting for other mtk devices, as sources are nearly the same.

    Lollipop on MT6577

    Hi there .

Just to let you know, that lollipop is now booting on ZTE v970 [MT6577- w/ ComBo-Chip MT6620]
With my custom 3.4.67 KK Kernel + some cherry-picks from the new MTK 3.10.54 LL Kernel

Still very early, baseband is recognized , but still needs a lot more work on Telephony, Platform, etc.

    ;)
