I can't S-off error code = 1) my bootloader: 1.44
Looking the screenshot in the first post...
Do I understand it correctly that I need to s-off with revone before unlocking the bootloader? What is the correct order of these things?
I'm comfy with adb, fastboot and all that, but this is my first htc phone

No... S-off is not needed for unlocking the bootloader... You need to unlock the bootloader first, the you can flash custom recovery etc... S-off plays no part in this process...

I'm also confused as to what the order is of doing the certain things. Please tell me what I should.
The general process I followed and which worked for me was the following:
* First and foremost: DECLINE ALL FIRMWARE UPDATES TO KEEP HBOOT VERSION 1.44.
* Second: Unlock bootloader via HTCDev.com and fastboot. This should just work.
* Third: Try and fail and few times with revone to get S-OFF. I had to try somewhere between 5 and 10 times before I got it going, but I didnt need to root before doing so.
* Fourth: Voila. All good. Accept all updates and move along nicely.
It may be possible to do it other ways and to unlock bootloader directly via revone, but this worked for me.
I have a European GSM/LTE model not tied to any carrier, if that matters, and it shipped with HBOOT 1.44.
confirm, this is the right way, don't forget to read this Guide - Vomer's Ultimate AIO - S-OFF, SuperCID, Firmware Upgrade & Custom Recovery
Since you're already here, and helpful... Are there any known disadvantages to going SuperCID? Or is it simply a no-brainer? I've backed up all my "vars", so if I need to return to stock, I know where I come from.
I'm not yet contemplating custom ROMs or rooting or anything like that, but historically, that's what I've done for all my devices, so I like to be prepared

Will NOT work. Your directory will look something like this and buttons won't work when you press it.

If you have 2 words, put the folder in Drive C:
