Tweaked 1.6 UVALL4 T889 Samsung Galaxy Note 2

NOTE: 1.6 is OTA-only, so you need to already be on 1.5 in order to get to 1.6.

Hey everyone - resident no-one-in-particular here that can't stay away from tinkering it seems. While I haven't had the Note 2 very long, I've been messing around with out-of-date phone stuff for a while now so I thought I'd try and get together a few of the things I've done in the past here. This was my first foray into the world of TouchWizzed Jellybean, and as I had minimal experience with such newer buttery goodness this has been quite the time consuming process - but on the upside I'm pretty happy with how things have turned out.

It should be noted that this is still a work in progress, but I feel enough is done to warrant it being posted - that way others (assuming others give it a shot) can let me know if things don't work or if any oddities come up. Also feel free to comment on how this might improve or if I've gone about anything in a not-so-smart way or if there is anything you would like to see (or wish wasn't there) - I can't promise I'll do anything about it, but such requests keep me motivated and learning, and thats been the driving force behind my tinkering since it began really :)

I AM IN NO WAY RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS (GOOD OR BAD) AS A RESULT OF FLASHING OR ATTEMPTING TO FLASH WHAT IS POSTED HERE!

CWM/TWRP Installation instructions:

Usual rules apply - while very much stable in my experience you should be cautious whenever you flash. Make sure to wipe data/factory reset to avoid issues. Flash in CWM/TWRP recovery - this should of course imply that you will need to already have such things in place if you are interested in giving this a try.

- Backup your current setup/data
- Download file and place on sdcard
- Boot into CWM/TWRP recovery
- Recommended to wipe data/factory reset in CWM/TWRP recovery
- Select and install the .zip you put on your sdcard

Miscellaneous Notes:

As the Note2 is privy to a number of ROMs and kernels, for the sake of simplicity I have included the unaugmented UVALL4 stock kernel. Also - this is still pretty much unthemed (if any would like to change this PLEASE let me know - a themer I am not!). There are a few minor theme-ish things going on in Mms and the Dialer, and the appearance of the pulldown is slightly different, but nothing major by any means. This is primarily UVALL4 stock-themed - and as can be gathered with the look and the included kernel the thinking behind the whole setup is stock with some extra options. My guess is most pre-existing things will give this issues, but I can't imagine any of the TW-based custom kernels out there to cause any grief.

I managed to get the Aroma stuff figured out, so starting with Tweaked 1.1 I will be using an AROMA-based install package. Make sure to thank amarullz for the awesome work!

Let me know if there are any suggestions/issues/etc - happy flashing!

FAQ

Q: What the hell is TSMParts (new option in Settings menu)?
A: A huge slew of mods and tweaks originally put together by the original members of TSM and inspired by impressive works of numerous others - the TSMParts interface acts as a control for all of the customizable fun available. There are a large number of options there - so make sure to check them all out!

Q: I'm having overlap issues with statusbar icons and center clock - what should I do?
A: Yeah - things may overlap, so you will have to either change settings to avoid the issue or just deal with it.

Q: I set a statusbar icon to hide, but it's still there. What gives?
A: The statusbar icon tweaks may require a little effort on your part for changes to take effect. All changes can be elicited with a reboot/hotboot, BUT for most there are other ways:
-- Bluetooth/vibrate-silent/alarm icons/ime -- just change their state (on/off or vibrate/sound, etc)
-- No sim -- if the notification is already active you will need to reboot/hotboot to hide it

Q: How does this One Hand toggle work?
A: The toggle, when on, forces ALL one-hand options to be selected. When off, it reverts the settings to WHATEVER they were before the toggle was turned on. This is still a work in progress, but it's a start. That being said - I'm open to suggestions on how to improve it :)

Q: The toggles in the pulldown are suddenly a weird large size (width) - what gives?
A: This happens sometimes (usually if auto-rotate is enabled) - all you need to do to "reset" the size of the toggles is enable auto-rotate, then go into an app that allows for rotation and ...well, rotate. Rotate back and check the pulldown - all should be well once again.

Q: CRT animation/volume wake don't work quite right... why?
A: Both of these features require a kernel that supports them to fully work.

Q: When I select Edit from the pulldown after taking a screenshot I get a FC - wth?
A: This happens if you don't have Paper Artist installed. Using whatever means you feel most comfortable with you just need to get PaperArtist.apk back into /system/app.

Q: Why are my widgets all screwed up?
A: Most likely because you are using a non 4x4 launcher - I have yet to come up with a perfect solution. If widgets are your thing - than so is the 4x4 launcher :)

Q: What is this LMT thing? How do you use it?
A: You need to check out noname81's thread here for info on that!

Q: Why don't you mention blah blah blah in your FAQ? It would have helped me a lot!
A: My bad - PM me anything you think should be added to this that would be helpful for the general user base! :)

TO-(hopefully)-DO

- Play around w/ getting Samsung Dive to work?
- Get the widgets and modded launchers to play nice
- Add another lockscreen option or two?
- See if things like hiding statusbar or toggling navbar onscreen buttons can happen...
- Add a USB-Tether Toggle

While the theme is pretty much stock, I figured I would throw in a few screenshots that show a few minor things.

So far so good like the lite theme.
Is that a new Samsung boot img or your own?
Only thing I had to change so far is the modem base back to UVALK8 my signal and dl speed were little off. (might be my area)
Gonna do a little testing with both modems to see which one works best for me.

Looking forward to your next release or update keep up the great work. TWO thumbs ups!!

The custom boot animation was made by jaekar99 - and it has been one of my favorites for many phones now, but he has a TON out there so you should definitely check them out. And the theme is all samsung really - I did very little to it all things considered.

Did you flash the UVALL4 modem separate, or were you already on it? I only ask as it is not included in the main zip. I haven't noticed any differences between UVALK8 or UVALL4 as far as modem stuff is concerned, but that stuff seems to be so location specific anymore I'm not surprised that you are seeing differences (although I believe you are in my neck of the woods actually...).

I'm glad to hear you are liking it though (and thanks for being one of the brave first flashers!) - run it through it's paces as there are lots of fun little tweaks you can do and I want to make sure all are working :) I need to figure out a way to make that changelog not look so... bloated lol.

Also - let me know anything that might be worth including/editing/deleting/etc for a next release - I managed to get most of what I wanted into the first version, so I could use a few more ideas :)

And thanks for the screenshots!

I did a clean wipe with this, I came from Jedi Master 8.
I do get FC on hotspot. (settings has stopped) Bummer use it a bit..
That boot is now my new fav also lol thanks.
I flashed stock modem and kernel hopping see some mod kernels real soon (damn Exynos)

Things I would like to see imo.
-Bravia Engine 2
-Wifi Tethering hehe
-Aroma would be kind of nice to pick which bloat I would like to keep but no biggie
-SuperSu
-CPU Sleeper Script
-baked in toolbox which now I really like, but don't see it to much tho I think its in jedi9x
-maybe a 5x5 Launcher
-SD booster

Look forward to be your text subject. I love to flash! I check a few times a day to see if there are any new roms.
Can always PM me also have a good one and thanks again.

Could I get a logcat of the FC w/ the Mobile HotSpot? I was able to turn it off/on/connect-to-it without issues, so I would be curious as to what happened there.

- Bravia Engine - hmm... I haven't been around newer phones for long, but I've heard mixed reviews on such things. Where exactly do you see differences? Is it just in general image quality or all around visual stuffs? From what I understand it's not too difficult to get in, but I am curious where I as a never-used-it-before user could expect to see effects of such things. Any info would be awesome :)

- Not sure why wifi tethering didn't work for you. Assuming the FC issue gets fixed for you I know there's the whole upsell issue - there are things that can be edited to try and avoid that but it seems pretty hit or miss on how well it works. I'll have a hard time testing that stuff though as I ended up getting it legitimately for a while on the cheap.

- I have a different plan involving something similar to Aroma - I've never used Aroma myself but it seems straightforward enough to figure out. That being said, in an attempt to be different I'll try out this other way first once I get everything all prepped for it - I'll let you know when I need some testing :) Also - there's the old school way available in the OP as well - a zip full of apks, and an empty zip you can put ones you want in to flash.

- SuperSU - isn't that what is included? Am I misunderstanding that one, or is there something else to it that I didn't include?

- CPU Sleeper script - is this an init.d script? A quick google search seems to say yes - and if so that's simple enough to drop into /system/etc/init.d

- Baked in toolbox - is this the Xposed framework stuff? I've looked at that stuff a number of times, and for me personally I enjoy figuring out how to do most of that stuff myself. From what I can tell there's a fair amount of overlap between what's in the various tweakbox mods and what has already been done in the rom. I know it limits a few things, but I don't want this to be just like all the rest (even though all stock modded roms are more alike than not) so presently I'm trying to avoid incorporating that one. We shall see how long that lasts.

- 5x5 Launcher - Totally agree. That is on the to-do list - hope it goes well lol

- SD Booster - is that an app? Some quick searching makes me think this is rooted primarily in editing the read_ahead_kb value, and that should also be easy enough to do with an init.d script

Keep the suggestions/thoughts coming! And let me know your thoughts on any of this!

I don't post very often but I really wanted to say thanks for sharing your time and talents with me. I really love this rom with all the tweaks. Which btw are all working great for me. I haven't come across any issues so far but if I do I'll let you know. This is a very solid rom and I seriously wouldn't change a thing!" I am so excited to be rocking this rom!"

Glad to hear it! My gut says people aren't much inclined to give it a shot, so much appreciated on trying it out and on any feedback you might have!

Nice rom.
All customization such as battery mods, time mods and lock-screen mods worked well. There are much more I didn't try though.
This rom is unique. Nobody has those futures.
Wifi hotspot app gives me FC. I dont know how to collect the logcat. I have Catlog app but i coudnt find the place where it saves logcats.
Dont include Rom Toolbox app somebody asked for that. It can be downloaded from the market.
Again, the rom has some very unique futures which are similar to Simplistic Framework but different. I really like it.

Re: [ROM][UVALL4][CWM/TWRP]Note2 Tweaked 1.0

Have to say this is one sweet Rom. Running great. About 12hrs use and no problems. Im guessing live wallpapers has been removed. Is there anyway for me to get it back? So far battery is really impressive. Much thanks for all your work.

Wifi hotspot is working fine for me. No errors or FC.

Dwitherall. The issue with hot spot FC is a framework array reference to tue tetheringprovisions.apk. pull the array and your issue will go with it. Havent seen you since the blaze lol big difference in size huh

The FC only seems to happen when engaging the hot spot through Settings - the toggle currently avoids the issue, though it will be resolved on the next update. I've been peeking around and I think I may take a crack at the Aroma-style install for folks - I've never messed with such things before, so it'll take a wee bit to get figured out. Also - I'm pretty sure I got the 5x5 launcher figured out :)

Hey - thanks for the tip! I ended up going through SecSettings and hacking out the few references that called on the array and the tetherprovisioning .apk - but it would have taken me a while to figure out the issue had you not mentioned this :) Yeah, I still mess around with the Blaze (it's my wife's phone), but I don't think I could go back to a phone that small now! By far this is one of the most enjoyable phones I've ever had a chance to mess around with. And might I just say - holy crap you are everywhere lol, crazy how you keep track of so many phones!

You can get all the live wallpaper stuff back through the zip of ALL system apps in the download post - just drop the ones you want to reinstall into the empty flashable zip (also in the download post) and flash :) Beyond the aroma install I have another way to go about getting apps back that I hope will be ready by the next update...

Trying this one now. Sweet. Was able to get Bravia and Acid in. Like the options for status bar.

    Re: [ROM][UVALL4][CWM/TWRP][AROMA]Note2 Tweaked 1.5 UPDATED 3/6

Is there any trick to lock rotation in landscape without the need of some random 3rd party app?

Lol a slip of the finger and bam - you got a thanks :)
I am not sure on this one... my guess is 3rd party app or build.prop edit maybe (though if that's possible I dunno what that edit would be lol).

So I'm about 90% of the way through SystemUI for 4.1.2... I've got a few toggles to clean up, some stock ones to explore, some odd stock home button behavior to look into, some new icon stuff to figure out... lots of little things. That being said, all the big statusbar mods are now in place, which makes me a happy camper anyway :) Once I've got things settled with SystemUI, I'll get 1.6 around to occupy folks until I finish off all the little things that are still left :)

    Howdy folks -

I've managed to get through most of what I call the "little" edits for 4.1.2 - there are still a few more before the 4 or so files that will be a beast to deal with. I'm thinking once I get to that point (all the little things are done), I'll take a step back and get 1.6 together for folks. I was going to do just a little OTA-style one for it and that was it, but I think (given issues people have been reporting w/ 4.1.2) it would be best to stick to the usual ways :)

Also - I've been running stock (even unrooted ?!?) for the last several days, and I haven't noticed any major issues. The reported lockscreen bug floating around looks like a bit of a pita to actually pull off, and the battery drain has been no different - BUT given that I am 1) not in a market set to get LTE right away and 2) there is no LTE on around me at the moment I set the network mode to automatic 4g/3g/2g as opposed to automatic lte/4g/3g/2g... just throwing that out there :)

    Off to bed I go.
