DSLRGalery for viewing raw images?

Hi,

I'm an active user of DSLRController, and I find many features extremely useful, icluding the possibility of draft reviewing the images on my tablet.
What I could not figure out if it is possible to view the images that I shoot with the camera, but did not download to the tablet directly with DSLRController?
I am in a situation where I could only copy the downloaded cr2 files from my laptop to the tablet, but after putting the files to the proper folder, DSLRGalery simply doesn't see them.
It would be a big help for me if you could tell me the trick how to open these files with the viewer -if it is possible at all...

Thanks a lot!

Freezes after connecting via wifi to canon 6D

Mine does the exact same thing. I got it to work by putting my phone into hotspot mode and connecting the camera to it. That worked. Never would work in the reverse.

Thanks--it works with the Xperia hotspot. I connected in smartphone/infrastructure mode from the 6D. Doesn't help with the Galaxy Tab, though, which doesn't have hotspot.

NewBe to start ....

Hi,

I own an iPad and a CamRanger but like to start with DSLR Controller to have an alternative to the iOS solution. And I would like to compare both solutions on my blog.

As I would need to start from scratch with Android and don't want to spend a lot of money for an Android tablet I'm looking for a nice tablet with a cost of max. 120 EUR.

Today I found two advertisements in our local newspaper offering the following

ASUS HD7-ME173X 7" QuadCore 1.2GHz, 8GB
HP 8 1401 8" QuadCore Cortex A7, 16 GB

I don't know if these devices would work with DSLR Controller?

I couldn't find these at the table of supported devices at the DSLR Controller webpage. Any suggestions and hints how to find a nice Android tablet that would be compatible? Any resources to get a new be started?

Many thanks.

Cheers

I can only speak about the Asus HD7 173x. I have one of those tablets and it is lacking a USB host controller. This means you can't tether a usb cable with the tablet and camera. However, I am hoping by adding a tp-link mr3040 pocket router (waiting for the postman to deliver) I will be able to control my camera wirelessly with the HD7. I believe if you have a new camera like a 70D you should be able to wirelessly connect without the purchase of an additional pocket router.

Native support for RAW files will arrive in the next version of Android (Google L) however if you look in the play store and search on CR2 then you find several APP's to display them.

Thanks!
Actually, the other apps do not convert the raw, but display the embedded jpg image - at least that's what I've read. And this embedded jpg could be quite limited (although I am not aware of the quality and resolution of the embedded jpg file).
There is one app which is recommended on many forums, but the development of this app is stopped, quote:
"I've halted work on Rawdroid. As of Android 4.4.2 Google disabled sdcard support for third party apps. "

I hope that this change in android version will not cause in the future a problem for DSLRController...
I'm looking forward for native raw file support.

Thanks!
G.

Since the latest release I've been having a few intermittent issues when the app starts up. Sometimes the live image doesn't show up on my phone, just the buttons on the border of what would be the image. Also, I'm getting more authentication errors, but I've found that simply toggling wifi off and on again will connect me to the network. I'm a huge fan of this app and use it regularly... but this weekend at a music festival I found myself really struggling to get it to work reliably which makes me a little concerned about using it in 2 weeks for a gig that is my biggest and busiest one each year - the Newport Folk Festival where I'm their stage photographer. Any clues as to why I'm having issues, and is it possible to download a previous version (assuming it's the software and not my phone - Samsung Galaxy S4 running Hyperdrive rom - that's the issue)?

The viewer is not meant to open files it didn't transfer itself. Also, it actually also displays the embedded JPG instead of the real CR2 data. The resolution of the JPG is 1/4th of the resolution of the CR2.

Using RAW+L will give you higher resolution images for reviewing using DSLR Controller, as the full resolution JPG will be used instead of the 1/4th resolution embedded JPG from the CR2. The L JPG will also generally be much smaller to transfer than the CR2, which speeds up use, especially when using Wi-Fi.

Note that JPG decoding is done by the hardware, I expect decoding the actual CR2 data is annoyingly slow (though maybe on modern devices not so annoying as two years ago)

I haven't seen any other reports like this. Can't comment on your ROM though. There's a setting somewhere that auto-disconnects from Wi-Fi networks if it doesn't provide an internet connection (which your camera doesn't), make sure that feature isn't enabled.

Is it possible to turn off the preview after a photo is taken?

If I do manual focus stacking, it is really annoying to skip back and forth.

It would be really nice if the app would download the picture after it was taken during timelapse mode, instead of waiting until the entire timelapse sequence was completed.

On tablets running KitKat with the latest v0.99.5, the default directory where it saves captures to the external SD Card is a very deeply rooted and hard to find directory. Would it be possible to change this on the next release so the user can choose the directory where captures are saved on the SD Card? Cheers.

Yes, this is configurable from the options (cogwheel) menu. Scroll way down.

No - this is the only directly KitKat will allow writing to, on the external SD card. New security thing.

Thanks ChainFire. By the way, is there a way to shoot using the shutter release from the camera itself and have someone else hold the tablet while you are shooting and still see the image previews show on the screen in real time in DSLR Controller. Perhaps I don't have it setup correctly, but when I try to do this it doesn't work. The only way the person holding the tablet seems to be able to see the images when I am shooting them is to load a group of previews after I have taken the shot, but these doesn't seem to be a way for them to see the shots in real time as I am shooting. Cheers. Marc

This is exactly what the "Image review - Follow shot" option is for in the (cogwheel) menu. It'll let you review images on the camera, and if you have the newest image selected, every time you shoot a new one (using the shutter button on the camera) it will be loaded and shown on the tablet.

MR3040 Version discrepancy

I hope someone has seen this before, but I have not found any results for my Google queries. I just purchased a MR3040 from a local store. The box showed that it was version 2.2. When I got home, I checked the version located on the barcode behind the battery. It also showed HW version 2.2. Here is where it gets weird. Once in the web page for the MR3040 it shows that it is HW version 1.0.

I went ahead and flashed the V1 DSLR Controller firmware and it loaded fine. Everything looked like I was going to be using it very shortly. Nope, would not recognize that the camera was connected. I went ahead and re-flashed the original firmware so that I can return it to the store. Any thoughts before I return the MR3040? It also has the two switches, but the cover does seem like it has been scratched up a bit. I was wondering if someone swapped the guts and returned it to the store. ???????????????

Hi there,

I'm using DSLR Controller with Colorfly E708Q1 Tablet (Allwinner A31) and EOS 500D. It runs good but has a few glitches. Are you willing to fix some things, if I provide more exact Information?

Also I'm planning to Change the tablet to a Nook HD+, has anyone tested DSLR Controller with it on CM11?

Anyways great job chainfire, gotta love my DSLR more and more :)

TP-Link MR3040 Version discrepancy...

Well, I returned it to the store and we figured out that it had been returned before. I thought that I was losing my mind! The store exchanged the MR3040 and I got a HW Version 2.3. Flashed the firmware and BINGO!!!....I am able to connect to my camera. Now to go have some fun!

I just started using the dslr controller but it didnt seem to what I wanted, I refunded within the 15mins so figured i'd ask some questions before buying again.

Basically I want to use the program so show the images im taking while in the studio on the tablet. Ideally jpg previews so they go to the tablet quickly.
Is this possible as I couldnt seem to get it out of live view.

PS is anyone using a v2.3 MR3040 succesfully?

No luck here :(

Using a Canon 5D MkII, HTC One M7 (Sense 6 / 4.4.2).

I received the MR3040 earlier today and was all excited, but couldn't get DLSRcontroller to recognise the camera. The app works fine via USB OTG cable, BTW (and great app!) - but nothing when connecting over WiFi.

I noticed the camera doesn't stay on very long when it's connected via USB to the TP-Link, so I suspect the USB bridge is not working or being recognised properly? With a 2.2 version does the camera stay on indefinitely while it's connected via USB (even if DSLRcontroller is not connected)?

I haven't looked into the OpenWRT settings on the TP-Link yet, is there anything worth trying out?

Thanks,
-Alex

Also, one more thing... sorry if this has been posted before, maybe I'm not searching for the right terms...

Have you documented somewhere what configuration settings need to be changed from a "standard" OpenWRT installation on the MR3040 to make it work with DSLRcontroller (at least for 2.2 which we know works)? Other than the wireless network settings, what else has been modified?

Thanks again!

---------- Post added at 11:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:23 PM ----------

Me again... and I have to add that serendipity strikes again...

I was messing around trying to get this to work and I had to run to answer the doorbell... I accidentally yanked the USB cable and basically ruined the connector... thankfully the camera wasn't knocked over, it was on a fairly sturdy mount!

Anyway... I grabbed another USB 2.0 cable, and on my next try the 2.3 MR3040 worked fine!!! I haven't fully tested it yet, but have turned the TP-Link on and off a few times, same with the camera, disconnected/reconnected the cable a few times too, and everything looks good. Kinda wondering what sort of crappy cable I was using before! So I'm a happy camper right now :D

My previous question about the OpenWRT configuration still stands, it would be nice to hear what customizations were applied to the standard installation...

In an effort to de-duplicate a lot of information, I have moved the bulk of it to the DSLR Controller website. This thread still remains the place to get support, discuss, and ask questions, though!

DSLR Controller was the first and remains the best app to fully control your Canon EOS DSLR from your Android device, through USB cable or Wi-Fi connection. No computer or laptop required, no root required, only a compatible mobile device, a compatible camera, and if connecting through USB, the right cable.

We strongly suggest you read up on the website ( http://dslrcontroller.com/ ) about what DSLR Controller can do, how it works, and how to use it, before purchasing. The website contains a wealth of information you should know before using.

Not all devices are compatible, especially if you want to use a USB connection. For a free app you can use to test compatibility, see the "Remote Release" app ( http://market.android.com/details?id=eu.chainfire.remoterelease ). If you need a refund, go to our website ( http://dslrcontroller.com/ ) and follow the instructions in the FAQ entry. We cannot process refunds through email.

Usage notes, feature lists, device compatibility lists, changelogs, FAQs, can all be found on our website: http://dslrcontroller.com/

Most questions should go to the support and discussion thread at XDA-Developers.com:
    http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1202082

I am a professional architectural photographer and have adopted your DSLR app into my workflow. Thank you for the great design and amazing functionality. It is a pleasure to work with*.

I would like to know what the future holds for DSLR Contorller. I noticed you are not very active on this forum (last post on 2/26/2015), but wanted to encourage you to keep on developing because I, We need it!!!

    ...
    .

DSLR Controller was originally built for Android 2.x years ago, and a lot of things have changed both in the camera world as well as the mobile world. Despite bolting on many improvements, the code shows its age. To take it to the next level and get everything I want into it (customizability, compatibility, portability, speed, etc), a lot of the core needs to be changed, the UI needs to be changed (if not in appearance or functionality then certainly how it's been coded), etc. It pretty much comes down to not just overhauling major parts, but completely redoing it from scratch, and rebuilding it as envisioned from the ground up.

This brings with it a number of issues. It is a lot of development time (and thus money) investment up front, of which you will see no results, until it is almost done. In the mean time, you can't really release anything that isn't up to par with the current version of DSLR Controller, and you can't just replace the current version as old users/devices may no longer be compatible, stranding paying customers. A lot of additional equipment needs to be gotten and tested with to ensure compatibility and portability (remote and end-user testing isn't really workable with apps like these). Not to mention that DSLRs are pretty much doomed, and this is definitely being reflected in daily sales.

The past year hasn't been very good on a personal level, which isn't your problem of course, but it is one reason for the lapse in development of certain apps. This one adds to the fact that in light of the above, it feels like a waste of resources to spend a lot of time on improvements in the current app. There have been talks with a team (from a big brand in the camera world) to take over the IP, pretty much solving the resource problem, but ultimately that fell through, after the talks taking up a large part of my time for months.

Also, I know it seems like DSLR Controller has generated a lot of funds, but spread out over the years its been available, subtracting equipment costs, corporate taxes, wage taxes, etc, you wouldn't be able to hire one(!) half-competent coder for the money left at today's going rates, not to mention the risks involved with hiring people. Even though I do get paid and get all these toys to play with, wanting to build it has always been a large part of this, as there are definitely more profitable ways to spend the time. At the same time having to compete with $300 equipment, and people still complaining about the $8 price.

This app is also a complete nightmare to support, as by far the bulk of the connection issues are not due to the app itself, but due to camera configuration, phone configuration, hardware incompatibilities, firmware incompatibilities, etc. That is, excepting the case where DSLR Controller just hangs, which sometimes (but definitely not always) is an issue with the app. Not to mention the droves of questions and reported issues by people who simply don't understand how their cameras work.

All of that being said, I do believe there may be a business case where a rebuild with additional features and support for Nikon and/or Sony and/or (insert other brands here) and other OSs like Linux, iOS, OS X, Windows, etc using a shared core may at least break even. That is, providing I can find competent developers to do it (as there is no way I can pull this off by myself), and finding said competent developers with at least somewhat relevant skills might in fact be the biggest problem to solve. Still, even in the best case scenario, I don't believe any work will get started before end-of-summer.

Don't mistake the lack of visible activity for lack of interest. What to do with DSLR Controller and how to get there is something I consider every day, as in the end, it's still the app I've enjoyed most developing over the years. But if the solution means spending more resources updating the current app, developing a new one, or investing funds to get a whole new company off the ground with a handful of people to cover both major brands and major OSs - that I don't know yet. But I do hope to have an answer to that sooner rather than later.

(this post was written in a rush as I need to run for another appointment but I didn't want to leave this unsaid, so if it's jumping here and there and not fully coherent, that's why)
    6
Hey Chainfire, I was wondering if there was an ETA for the next update? I know asking such things is never liked, Im not looking for a hard date just a rough idea and if there is anything else we can do to help?

After next week I have three weeks reserved for exclusive DSLR Controller work, if that doesn't finished the upcoming update, I'd be surprised :)
    5
The price will go up once v1.0 is reached, but the upgrade is free for those who have this BETA???

Why can't I see free version?

Because it's good software and the developer deserves to get paid. Beta doesn't mean it's not valuable, it means that the software isn't very mature or well tested. if you want it now, you pay. If you want to pay once it's well tested and proven then wait.

Either way, quit your sniveling people. This is an AMAZING deal at that price. If you can afford a DSLR and know how to use it, you can afford 10 times this and would gladly pay it. If you think otherwise, you likely don't need this software to begin with and have nothing to complain about.
