Personally, I can't be without my device for too long, and Samsung may hold onto his device for a while. But doesn't hurt to inquire, and save some good money.
With that being said, the op should call Samsung, tell them when asked that the screen doesn't light up, and see what the protocol is.
If its fixed under warranty and the op can wait, that's great.
If something is fried, and Samsung determines it was user caused and voids the warranty, I'd argue the point and see how it goes.
If the warranty route is taken, and successful, can't ask for more
