Kindle Fire HD and 2 First Aide Software - Noob (Simple) Version

I am sorry for being so dense but I cannot find the software update page on Amazon. I searched for kindle software update and it simply shows me apps. Under Operating Systems, Amazon doesn't even list Android. Isn't there a simple OS version range that's for Kindle Fire and another for Kindle Fire 2? Thanks.

sjargo,

Go here for the Kindle Software update. When you go to the Kindle and go to More + and About Device, what is your software version?

Here is a link to Amazon Software Update Portal: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200529680

So what's the deal with this does it work for kindle fire hd 8.9 yet. If so is it flawless yet I'm not using this until it's 100 percent guaranteed not to screew up my 400 dollar tablet. I can't afford to replace it

rege420,

Our software had one main issue on the Kindle Fire 8.9" that was solved over 4 months ago. We use it daily internally and have no complaints. Recently we had a Dropbox outage but this did not brick devices, just would not download new images. We offer full 24x7x365 support through our ticket system - PLEASE post a ticket if you need rapid service.

Kindle Fire HD and 2 First Aide Software - Noob (Simple) Version

Thanks for Kindle Firste Aide Chris.

Rooted KFHD7, as well installed step 18 Google Market and had no issues. I decided to run an Adobe Flash apk found on another site for BBC Iplayer 4OD etc. After this found Silk browser and Amazon Shop would not work, after some thought decided to run step 31 Fix Permissions from your software Kindle Firste Aide and hey presto all working brilliant.

Thanks for all your help, keep up the good work and I look forward to your future Kindle Fire HD projects.

fs1023

fs1023,

Outstanding feedback! This type of feedback really helps us to improve the software. We need both sides regarding feedback otherwise we never know what works and what is causing people trouble, I wish we had more people posting this kind of feedback. Thank you again fs1023!

By the way, look for a new release this weekend.

It would be good if there was a stock restore option as well as a prerooted option. The 7.2.3 restore came rooted, with google play, Ads and OTA disabled plus possibly some other options that users may/may not want.

grommet80,

Great feedback. What about something like this?

You would select let's say option 3 Restore, then you would see:

1) Would you like Google Play?
2) Would you like Root?
3) Would you like me to disable OTA?

That way you have full granular control of your restore. If you like the idea, I will add it to the next release.

ANYONE HAVE ANY OTHER IDEAS? WE WILL BE LAUNCHING A NEW RELEASE BY MONDAY, SO NOW IS THE TIME TO SPEAK UP!

Whoops, seems like I spoke too soon. Upon launching Google Calendar on my Fire HD 8.9 this morning, all my calendars were again un-synced. They were still listed under the settings in the app, but none were check-marked any more. I had to reselect all the ones I want to sync and allow them to resync. :(

ETA - Yes, I do have my Sync settings set to sync Calendar, both on the Google end and the Amazon end.

CheriePie,

I am going to work on this Calendar topic this weekend, just FYI.

Posted under Bug ID: 7 and 10.

Sorry to hear that your calendars are not staying synced. That is strange -it sounds like a consistent error due to some routine or process influence. First I will try to create a shared calendar and see if it works and second I will scan around and see if there is any common cause for sync going south!

Perhaps others here have wrestled with this problem?

Wow, for me it seems that those options are pretty much what everyone I know who has a KFTT wants to add ;)

IF you want to return to stock, can't you download the 7.2.3 image from Amazon, place it in the update folder and run the update? or perhaps flash it in lieu of Prokennexus' image (manually) in Fastboot? That might work, too!

Good luck!

markbc01,

Actually you bring up a good idea. Download the software update and place the update inside the Kindle Software Updates folder and Amazon Update will automatically run after the battery is >=75%.

Although I do understand his request and can accommodate it.

Kindle Fire HD and 2 First Aide Software - Noob (Simple) Version

Bottom line as a KFTT owner, I've used the First Aide software twice to correct problems on my KFTT 7," and several other times to add features. It's not perfect, it's beta (but better beta than Siri :). Of course, this is a developers site so things like "100 percent guaranteed" and "flawless" are not terms you are likely to see.

Now that I think of it, I can't recall one custom rom on the four (wow...it's been four already!) android phones and three tablets that I have owned that has been 100% for 100% of the users. As I read XDA, Android Central or other sites, I am always amazed at how what works for one user won't work for another! Why is that?

Yet, that it appears to be the nature of the developers' world. That's why they enjoy doing this -for free, for their personal interest-- again and again, for the challenge! The DEVs offer their work for our use and to help us, but none I have used have offered 100 percent guarantees. . .:cowboy:

In that sense, this site is different, and it is because of Prokennexus. Unlike 99.9% of the developers out there, he does take his dev work to the next level, and clearly states that if we can't get our Kindle Fires working we could actually mail them to him -and he will work magic on them and they will work.

Of course that part can't be free, but it is very reassuring --in a way that no other site I have ever been on in XDA or elsewhere has done. . . .I can't tell you how many times I have flashed the wrong kernel, the wrong rom, the incorrect version or some "great new adaptation across versions/platforms" that has "soft bricked" my phone or tablet. When that has happened the Dev or poster was not on the hook for anything -and usually has little to say about it. (Sadly, in many threads, raising a problem is a great source of "flame-bait!). Whenever problems did occur, it's been up to me to search, read and fix, no matter what the rom or kernel or app developer did.

Prokennexus does offer an alternative. So knowing that he does, I am even less concerned than ever about experimenting when I feel the need to reshape my KFTT. My only constraint is to not fiddle with it when I am using it for work-related reading (it is so much easier than being tied to a computer). :fingers-crossed:

I also had the 8.9 --nice tablet (and a bit more pricey) but I just did not like the size...I have finally figured out that for me the 7" tablet is right (although I took a performance hit to do that --the 8.9 is visibly faster and smoother!). However, I felt that the 8.9 was a bit more "finicky" as regards its software.

The KFTT 7" seems to me to be a bit less complicated internally (whether or not that is really true). So my judgement has been that the mods and fixes like those offered by anyone, including Prokennexus, are simply going to be hit or miss for a while on the 8.9 until there have been enough iterations to optimize the app.

Even after that, I am sure that it will not run the same way for 100% of the users 100% of the time. Android is just not like that, at least in the XDA world.

Good Luck!

markbc01,

Thank you for your support and kind words, you know I will stand behind my work 100% even if I have to buy someone a new Kindle.

Was trying to use this for a sig, but I can't get it within the size restrictions w/o it getting all muddy, so I won't.

My KFTT is running grandly. Seems when First Aide encounters a Kindle straight out of a full wipe, it hums. A unit with "personality" (junk) gives it some issues. Your mileage may vary.

BELASCO,

I looked outside and nothing! Hmmm.

Something is always up.

Speaking of that...the Sony/GTV NSZ-GS7 Streaming Media box? Finicky little beast.

I will totally agree with the comment about First Aide and personalization. I had mine thoroughly personalized then installed some addons and it seemed to succeed, but it would randomly reboot when doing anything from watching a movie to typing an email. It also would take longer and longer to boot every day.

Full restore from First Aide, worked wonderfully, and then I restored my titanium backups, working so much better than it did when I rooted manually, and manually had to install play store, before I discovered First Aide. One thing I might suggest as an addition is to allow a modded version of play store to be installed, one that prevents auto updates of the market app itself. Also something I suggest adding is Xposed Framework, and the All apps in play store module. Another good app that allows dpi changes on an app by app basis is Xposed app settings. I can see everything in the app store, and download it, even resize it as I see fit.

Just a little food for thought, if you need the apk's I can post them to my Dropbox.

Wouldn't mind trying Xposed Fmwk again. I'm dead tired of jacking around w/Market Helper.

Sent by KFTT, in spite of everything.

Xposed Installer

Xposed All Apps in Playstore
http://db.tt/wrSwk6TM

Xposed Settings (Dpi changes on an app by app basis, as well as permission mods)

For the last one I have adw launcher one dpi, button savior another, some games another size. Even have the ICS Clock a larger size setting for aesthetics.

Works wonderfully, but be careful with it, wrong dpi in wrong app (launcher for example and you are screwed!)

sjargo,

You have two easy ways to identify the Kindle, do the Fastboot command or flip the Kindle over and look at the tiny model number in the back at the bottom center.

Then enter that number into Google and post here.

It's model D01400. I entered it into Goggle but I don't understand what that is supposed to tell me. Thanks.

Hi everyone,

I've been quiet for a bit as I didn't have a Kindle to play with!

I purchased a new KFHD7, it was running 7.30.
I tried to use KFFA to root this device yet the SU never got installed.
The errors / messages flashed by so fast I couldn't screenshot them all.
Anyway, afterwards the KFHD7 had Busybox Installer and Superuser in the Apps.
When I attempted to run the Busybox Installer from the Kindle, it would fail.
When I attempted to run the Superuser it would say the binaries weren't present.
- I know I haven't provided the exact messages, just giving a quick run down, plus it was a couple days ago!
-- I will run the commands individually later if we need them for analysis
After the attempt, the icons were 'grayed out' and the KFHD7 ran very sluggishly.
I panicked (a little), downloaded the 7.31 Amazon update, dragged it to the Internal Storage and updated the KFHD7.
That didn't fix the icons or performance so I did a System Restore from Settings > Devices... within the KFHD7.
Voila, it's back, wiped of applications and personal data.

I have seen a couple posts stating if you were running 7.30 (or later) the root process is done manually, not with KFFA.
My SkOrPn Fastboot Cable will arrive today so I'll try again tonight.

Any comments, tips on rooting the new 7.31 would be appreciated.

As always, thanks to the community for all the information and experience shared here.
I have always said 'why reinvent the wheel', that's why I came here.
Thanks again!

UPDATE:
Successfully rooted KFHD 7.31 with Root Many Android utility.
Used KFFA to install Play & Holo Launcher
The only thing is when I'm the Play Store, I can't see my 'Home' or 'Back' buttons...
That's not a deal breaker though as I can just touch the Power button to lock, unlock and I'm 'Back'.

Now that I'm rooted, any suggestions?
I wanted to try CM10, Kinology... just for fun!
This is probably the wrong thread for that!

UPDATE2:
Success!
Used KFFA to install TWRP, Backup Stock files, and fix sluggish responses.
Installed Kinology 2.0.1 from their dedicated thread
Along the way I fixed a couple bricks with SkOrPn Factory Cable (Thanks Rod!)

Again, I couldn't have done it without all of you!

sjargo,

Fip the Kindle over, at the bottom is a number, what is the number? If you Google the Model number you will obtain the correct informtion. Also you may turn the Kindle OFF, plug into USB, make sure the Kindle remains OFF, then enter this command:

PHP:
cd C:\KFFirstAide
fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product

Turn the Kindle ON, what is the model listed after <waiting for device>?

Please open a ticket prior to sending it to me.

I goggled the model number D1400 and I get plenty of results but they just say it's a Kindle Fire not whether it's version 1 or 2. Where did you think I'd be able to find out the information I'm looking for?

Hey guys, i read on another post that I should come here if I have any question.

So, i did the process for installing XBMC on a kindle fire hd 7, running 7.2.3. Apparently it worked, but when I select XBMC i get the pop message "XBMC has stopped".

Is this because something's wrong with the apk, or i missed something?

I read a whole another thread but no one answered that and actually pointed the guy who asked to come here...

Stuck in fastboot mode - "Start downloading"

Hi,

Can someone help me, please.

I was going to install CM10.1 on my KFHD8. I was doing it inside Win7 Virtualbox machine and everything went fine until I started this command:
Code:
fastboot -i 0x1949 flash bootloader kfhd8-u-boot-prod-8.1.4.bin

Then I got kernel panic on my linux (host) machine and KFHD got stuck at "Start downloading" message in fastboot mode.

Is there a way to restart the process. When I booted the computer I tried executing the same command but all I got was
< waiting for device >
and no device was detected in device manager when I disconnected and connected the USB cable.

I can wait until the battery drains - but what then? Will I be able to charge the device then and try to redo this step and continue with the process?

Is the tablet bricked or do I still have hope of reviving it? Maybe using some special USB cable?

way, this took us weeks to perfect, so please respect the code. If you have recommendations, please post them,
we love to give you the feature that are important to YOU not us.

Kindle Fire First Aide Step 1: Using Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome or Internet Explorer Download Kindle Fire First Aide 4.1.100-Beta:
    KFFirstAide.zip

Note: Be sure to extract the package to C:\KFFirstAide

Update Java To The Latest Version here: Java SE Development Kit 7u25

Kindle Fire First Aide Step 2: Using either 7-Zip or Microsoft Zip, unzip the KFFirstAide100.zip to your C:\ Drive as C:\KFFirstAide

Kindle Fire First Aide Step 3: With your mouse, open the C:\KFFirstAide contents by double mouse clicking the C:\KFFirstAide folder

Kindle Fire First Aide Step 4: Find the RunMe.bat file. Right Hand Mouse click on RunMe.bat, select 'Send to', select Desktop (Create Shortcut). Now press the Left Hand Mouse button to create the Shortcut named RunMe.bat. Temporary disable the Android SDK.

Kindle Fire First Aide Step 5: Find the RunMe Shortcut on your desktop, select it by left mouse click over the icon, then while on the icon choose Right Hand mouse click, select Properties.

Kindle Fire First Aide Step 6: This will display the RunMe properties. Select the General Tab, change the top name to KF First Aide. Then click on the Shortcut tab, click on Advanced. Check 'Run as Administrator', click OK, then click Apply, then click OK. All windows should be closed.

Kindle Fire First Aide Step 7: Double Mouse Click the new Icon named KF First Aide. You may be presented with a security window, just click Yes.

Kindle Fire First Aide Step 8: Please click on the Windows Key plus Pause/Break, this will display the Windows System Properties. Next Click on the Advanced Tab and find "Environment Variables". Please click on Environment Variables and find the Path Statement. Carefully add at the end of the Path Statement:

    Code:
    ;C:\KFFirstAide

Note: Do Not forget the (;) semi-colon before the C:\KFFirstAide

Kindle Fire First Aide Step 9: That is it! The software is ready. Next we get the Kindle ready to Flash.

Kindle Fire First Aide Step 10: Next, go to the Kindle, pull down the status menu, select More+ then select Security, make sure Enable ADB is ON. Last, depress the <- and select Device. Make sure 'Allow Installation of Applications' is On.

Kindle Fire First Aide Step 11: Insert the Original USB Cable to the Kindle, please ensure you have a solid connection, this is VERY critical.

Kindle Fire First Aide Step 12: Next, make sure the Kindle Fire is Turned Off. Take the other end of the USB Cable and carefully inset it into a free USB Slot on your Computer - be careful to not disconnect the other end.

Kindle Fire First Aide Step 13 : The Kindle Fire should automatically turn on and boot regular Bootmode. If the Kindle does not turn on depress the power button until it turns on. Next select Option 15 in the Software. The Kindle will reboot and will now see a screen that says: Fastboot Kindle Fire.

Note: If Option 15 does not trigger the Kindle to boot into Fastboot, then your Bootloader is damaged. Please send SkOrPn a PM to order a Factory USB Cable.

Kindle Fire First Aide Step 14: Place the Kindle on a safe surface so it does not disconnect when running the software.

Kindle Fire First Aide Step 15: Launch the KF First Aide software by double mouse clicking on the KF First Aide icon.

Kindle Fire First Aide Step 16: You will be presented with a Kindle Fire First Aide Menu, carefully select the operations you would like to perform on the Kindle.

Kindle Fire First Aide Step 17: If the option states "Fastboot" you need to leave the Kindle as noted above, this is Fastboot Mode. As the last operation be sure to Wipe the Cache and User Data which is Backup Option 3 in the Menu.

Kindle Fire First Aide Step 18: Next, we will disable "Fastboot Mode" and enable ADB on the Kindle Fire. Select Option 10 in the Software Menu, the Kindle will Reboot into Regular Mode.

Kindle Fire First Aide Step 19: You may now perform the 'ADB Mode' options in the Menu.

Kindle Fire First Aide Note 1: Remember, after you perform the full Recovery, you are working with a Fresh Copy of the Software. ADB is disabled by default so be sure to Enable ADB under Security and Allow Installation of Programs under the Device Tab.

Kindle Fire First Aide Note 2: After the complete restore, please be sure to clear the Davlik Cache and the User Data by selecting Backup Option #3. You may also wipe the User Data and Cache by opening a Administrative Command Prompt within the KFFirstAide Folder and enter:

    Code:
    fastboot -i 0x1949 erase cache
    fastboot -i 0x1949 erase userdata
    fastboot -i 0x1949 reboot

Kindle Fire First Aide Note 3: The original versions of the Kindle Fire HD 8.9" with a software Versions 8.2.3 or 8.2.4 may find there Kindle Boot-loader loops to a Red Fastboot Screen. If your Kindle is stuck in Fastboot, please follow these steps to recover the Boot-loader: How To Recover Kindle Fire HD 8.9" Bootloader*

Note: Please be aware of two main options in the Menu - one is Fastboot Mode where you have several Menu Operations that use Fastboot to execute properly and two is ADB Mode where you have several Menu Operations that use ADB to execute properly.

Backup Option #1 Note: When selecting Backup Option 1 the images will be backed up to the SD Card in a folder named KindleBackup. Please copy this folder to your desktop until we are able to upload it to our secure servers. There will be a restore option in the future that will automatically pull YOUR images for restoration. There is a known Bug in Windows where you will not see the images in the Kindle Internal Drive which can be found in Computer. To overcome this issue, please download and install WiFi File Transfer then open your Web Browser to transfer these Backup files from your Kindle to the PC.

Backup Option #2 Note: When selecting Backup Option 2 the images are first copied to the Kindle, then they are transfered to your Computer inside a folder named Backup which can be found inside the C:\KFFirstAide folder.

*Note: After several conference calls with the Amazon Development Team we found Amazon applied a patch to the Bootloader in an effort to lock down the Bootloader, this patch rarely causes the Bootloader to stick or Bootloop, please use the above link to release the Bootloader. We have removed this patch from the boot-prod.img eliminating future issues with recovered HD 8.9" users.

How To Manually Recover The Kindle Fire 8.9" Stuck In Fastboot?

    To All-

If you would like to try a last ditch effort in getting the Kindle Fire 8.9" back online, please do the following:

Step 1: Please run the Kindle Fire First Aide, attempt the HD 8.9" Recovery, if it fails move on to Step 2

Step 2: Exit the Kindle Fire First Aide utility, double mouse click the KFFirstAide Folder.

Step 3: Download Boot Image Number 1 from here (save the image to the KFFirstAide Folder): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/54456659/kfhd-8.2.3/Images/boot-prod.img

Step 4: Download Recovery Image Number 2 from here (save the image to the KFFirstAide Folder): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/54456659/kfhd-8.2.3/Images/recovery-prod.img

Step 5: Open up an Administrative Command Prompt from within the KFFirstAide Folder by opening up the KFFirstAide Folder then press your Right Hand Mouse Key while you are over the KFFirstAide Folder contents, then select Open a command prompt here. You should see something like

    Code:
    C:\Users\Your Name\KFFirstAide>
Step 6: Next you would make sure the Kindle Fire is plugged into USB and Turned off, type the following and press enter after the command while the Kindle is off and plugged into USB:

    Code:
    fastboot reboot -i 0x1949
Step 6: You will see a Windows Command Prompt that will look like:

    Code:
    C:\Users\Your Name\KFFirstAide>fastboot reboot -i 0x1949
    <waiting for device>
Step 7: Next Power on the Kindle While you see the above, one the Kindle Boots the Kindle will suddenly reboot back into Fastboot although we have seen this step free the Bootloader, so if the Kindle begins to Boot normally unplug it from USB, if the Kindle boot back to Fastboot red screen proceed to step 8.

Step 8: While the Kindle is in Fastboot Mode type the following at the Windows Command Prompt:
    Code:
    fastboot flash recovery recovery-prod.img -i 0x1949
    Code:
    fastboot erase cache -i 0x1949
    fastboot erase userdata -i 0x1949
    fastboot reboot -i 0x1949
Step 9: Leave the Kindle Plugged into USB. Wait for the device to Boot back to Fastboot, if the device boot back to a Fastboot screen with odd vertical line running through it, stop here, the Kindle has begun the recovery phase. If the Kindle begins it recovery, it will react odd and reboot several times, this is normal. Wait 10 to 15 minutes. If the Kindle boot back to Red Fastboot Screen proceed to Step 10.

Step 10: Leave the Kindle Plugged into USB. Next type the following command:

    Code:
    fastboot flash boot boot-prod.img -i 0x1949
Step 11: Next let's do a little house cleaning. The following commands wipe the old Dalvik Cache and User Data which is, in simple, tied to the old Android Operating System. Having said this, when the new OS attempts to retrieve data from these partitions, a content stream of errors occur in the background, causing the Kindle to react VERY slow and at times completely unresponsive. To eliminate this problem we will wipe these partitions before booting the new OS. Please enter the following commands, press enter after each one:

    Code:
    fastboot erase cache -i 0x1949
    fastboot erase userdata -i 0x1949
    fastboot reboot -i 0x1949
Step 12: Unplug from USB. The Kindle HD 8.9" will reboot with an odd Fastboot screen with vertical lines running through it, this is normal, do not interrupt the recovery. Let the Kindle begin it's recovery phase. This may take up to 10 to 15 minutes and the Kindle will reboot several times.

Step 13: Once the Kindle Stabilizes, please be sure to apply the Amazon OTA Patch before connecting the Kindle to your WiFi, otherwise you will loose Root and Google Play Store which are both installed on the images.

Step 14: After you applied the patches please wait for the Kindle to rebuild itself, this can take up to a couple of hours. If after 4 hours the Kindle is still reacting slow, perform a Kindle Fire HD 8.9" Factory Reset. This option can be found under the More+ > Device > Restore to Factory Defaults. We find this last step is rarely used.
