That's what I'm thinking, but it's strange to have only shorted out the leads for usb connection but the leads for charging were fine (or appeared to be fine at least lol) stranger still is that his phone was plugged into the same port for a longer period of time then mine, yet his is all fine and dandy. so I have no idea whats what xD Regardless, the replacement phone seems to be better than the old one with the only downside being it's already on 2.20

I realize you got things figured out already but I thought I would add my similar experience with my old Aria. I too was unable to get a data connection to the PC, it would just only charge. Well it turned out that over the almost two years I had it, it accumulated a fair amount of pocket lint packed inside the phone's USB port. So the connector would go in far enough to charge but not enough to get the data connection.
Probably wasn't your issue but your problem reminded me of mine so I thought I would share. Feel free to laugh at my misfortune, I know I did once I stopped crying lol.
