First off, I had to browse over MANY different forums to make this phone to WiFi tether.

EDIT: Mar-14-2013; The edits are to simplify the instructions. Also, after repeatedly rdoing my phone, I know it works, every time.

1) Root your phone.
If it's already rooted, skip this step. There's a lot of options out there. Use whatever method you like. Just for reference, I used (Option 2): http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1955423
How to video

2) Grant superuser access to apps
Fom this point forward, grant superuser access to all request (From the apps below)

3) Download "WiFi Tether for Root Users"
DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT FROM GOOGLE PLAY!!! (If you do, it will NOT work)
Download the app, straight from the project's page
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wifi_tether_v3_3-pre2.apk&can=2&q=

For your reference:
Project's home page: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/

4) Open and configure "WiFi Tether for Root Users"
  1. Select Menu (From your phone's physical lower bottom corner)
  2. Choose Settings

Once in settings, make these changes:
[*][Change Device-Profile] --> Select "Samsung Galaxy S3" [If you skip this step, it won't work]
[*][Change Setup Method] --> Select "Netd-Ndc (master)"
[*][Send Netd Max Client Cmd] --> Check the box
[*]If you want to add a password: [Enable Wi-Fi-Encription] --> Check the box
[*]If you want to personalize your SSID: [Change SSID] --> Rename it to your preference

DONE

FYI: Depending on your plan and carrier, if it doesn't work it's mostly due to the plan/carrier limitations. I say this because I factory reseted my phone over 10 times, to test the instructions. It WORKED EVERY TIME.
PS. I am a newbie, so I wont be able to answer technical questions. This is what worked on my SGH-T889 phone.

I've got the same phone as you. Rooted with exynos abuse. Followed directions, installed apps and allowed acces but the se nd max clients thing doesn't appear on the app you gave me. I started the tether with the settings and got 0kb across the board.

As far as I know I thought T-Mobile can detect this form of tethering use and will start to warn you of the offense via text.

Nope. Doesn't work. I tried lots of settings and none of them worked. I wonder if it's hosting WiFi in Wireless G or Wireless N. 20mhz or 40mhz? 2.4gHz or 5gHz?

My laptop I tried using to connect to it is the old Wirless 802.11g with 2.4ghz support only, but I also couldn't see it with my own Wireless N router survey using all frequencies.

Conflusion: Doesn't work, actually. Post video evidence for the skeptics.

I am currently looking for a way to fix this issue. I am really good with getting Wifi-Tether to work. And i have done it for multiple devices that carriers don't allow it.

More progress to come...

I read in the TMO SGS3 forum that before you run the tether u should run Hotspot Shield VPN app from the market and you shouldnt have any problems...its worth a try

Can't you just use any of those 3rd party Wifi Tether apps on the Play store to get some form of tethering working?

Will this work if I just rooted with exynos exploit?
Also, what exactly is tethering?

Following these steps worked for me: http://xdaforums.com/showpost.php?p=37172883&postcount=10

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=android.tether (I use mod version linked above)

This program enables wifi AND bluetooth-tethering (PAN) for "rooted" handsets.
Clients (your laptop for example) can connect via wifi or bluetooth and get access to the internet using the mobile connection (4G, 3G, 2G) or (in case you are using bluetooth) the wifi connection which is established by the handset.
Wifi-tethering creates a so called adhoc (peer-to-peer) network on most devices. Infrastructure-mode is suppported for some devices – including the HTC Evo for instance.

** FEATURES **
-) Access-control feature. Allow/deny clients to use your mobile-data connection.
-) Wifi-Encrytion. 128-bit WEP in general. WPA/WPA2 on supported devices.
-) Reduce wifi-transmit power (on supported devices)
-) Settings for wifi-ssid, wifi-channel, „lan“-network and more.

This application requires a "rooted"-device and a (custom-) kernel which supports netfilter (iptables)!
** PREREQUISITE **
1) Root
2) Netfilter-enabled kernel

For more information visit our developer-site on google-code:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/

Use this application at your own risk. It is possible that use of this program may violate your carrier's Terms of Service."

Theft lol right, I love how people forget that the airwaves they use belong to the tax payers, and they don't even have the decency to pay for it they pass the FCC tax onto us yet tell us how to use what is ours. And screw that PC bullcrap if you say unlimited then mean it, don't hide behind some small print that explains how their initial claim of unlimited was a lie wouldn't that be a novel idea...

Guys, after a little skepticism on my part, I did everything in the first post, and voila, tethering works! Thanks to the OP fir the tip!! Everyone please try this, it will work.

1st make sure phone is rooted
2nd download the file from step 5.2 (should be named 3_3pre2 something.
3rd Select all options like he says. I also selected the reload wifi divers option to make it work on my phone.

Not a matter of a better idea, just the facts. Personally I just pay for Internet service. Novel idea right? LOL. I just get a kick out of the guys who think they are tricking the carriers. At any point in time that they have the desire they can detect you trying to steal the bandwidth and break the TOS and toss you off the network. You are not tricking them they just choose to pay no attention.. If they decide to crack down the theft will be over LOL.

God, you sound like a pompous ass. So if I want to use my Nexus 7 that is WiFi only, I should be hamstrung to using it from my own router at the house? Just think if your local home internet provider tried to tell you you could only use your PC for data. While I am travelling I use my nexus 7 that's tethered to my Note 2. While I own a T-Mobile Note 2, I dont have T-Mobile service. Stop trying to talk down to people who want to tether because you think you don't. Just the facts, you are an idiot...mainly for not realizing we ALL pay for internet service.

Anyone have this working on SGH-T889 (one of the reasons I was going to root) or will T-Mobile still block it? (would prepaid make a difference)?: http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=2113053 - Thnx
