+1 on that for me. I've ordered the parts but my luck I will solder the ground cable to the power pin and mess it all up.

Does anyone knows if such a thing exist: a small microUSB to microSD card reader ?
i.e. something like the tiny USB key that have a micro SD card reader, but with a micro-B USB interface (instead of a full USB) ...
I have been searching crazy lately, but nothing !!! (I can't believe that some manufacturer did not had this idea ?!)
Furthermore, micro USB card reader a very rare ! Any reason ?
As a result, I am about to DIY the thing inspired by the following example (but with micro-B usb and with direct connection):
http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1713914
Starting with something like:

and
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820313271
The final goal would be to create a micro-usb to microSD adaptator as small as possible ...
Any better idea ? or product you know ?
Wonder if a product like this 1 paired with this 2 would work by putting the microsd into the usb adapter then placing the usb into an OTG type adapter cable?

Hi guys,
It's my first post in this forum and I've read almost every post of this 20 pages thread trying to find the best (smallest) solution to put more GB on my Nexus 7. I bought some components and I'm ready to make a DIY micro usb to micro sd adapter, however, I'm having trouble finding how to wire the interface between the USB and the mSD card. My intuition says it has to be really simple, as some usb-to-sd look just like some pin-to-pin connections...
!
The reason you are having trouble is because there is not way to pin to pin wire those 2, those are two completely different interfaces you need a microchip that can bridge those two. as for the power goes, it is not as simple either you need some regulation and power managements to accomplish what you want or you are going to either burn out the Host by supplying too much current or burning the device.
Thanks Maturola for your help. I understand it has to be some power regulation (I think SD cards use 3.3V while USB provides 5V right?), and probably a chip, but it has to be a fairly simple thing, since they are really small micro-sd readers that doesn't seem to have a lot of circuitry inside.
I understand you have put a lot of work in this and you are trying really hard to take it to the next level (production), that's why I don't expect you to provide me with all the details and help I'd like to have, I understand that and I wish you the best of luck :good:
I know I'm missing something here. I'm asking myself questions that you guys have to have solved long time ago, I hope somebody can help me!
Not at all! Thank you for your kind answer Maturola, and don't get me wrong, I just felt it would be normal for you not to give away a lot of info, I'm not telling I read it in your words.
Cool, i got no plans on keeping anything for myself, I would support and share anything I am not legally bound to keep a secret.
The black dot it is in fact a covered interface chip.
This thread got a nice wiring diagram on how you can connect the USB traces to the MicroUSB connectorl

Maybe we can get one of this in future... we can send this photo to Sandisk and ask to do it than one day....
This would, in my view, make for the shortest possible form factor. Yeah yeah, you keep saying it can't be done, but I don't wanna hear it. I'm just telling you what I would like in a design.
True story: When Steve Jobs first held the initial prototype for the iPad, he took it and instantly threw it in an aquarium. Millions of dollars worth of R&D and months, lost. Why? He said, "See those bubbles? There's air in this. Make it smaller." And left the board meeting.
here's my first attempt to use with my nexus 10:

Here's some images of my first attempt at making a MicroSD to MicroUSB OTG adaptor. It works 100%
So come on all we need now is someone to reduce the size and manufacture them !
