It's as if you're not allowed to criticize the Nexus 5 around here. Why would we criticize it if there was no need to?
I'm really eager to see what the Moto X + 1 will offer, hopefully the screen won't be enormous and I hope support will be as good when Lenovo takes over. The only Nexus device I might still consider after this, is from HTC or Sony. Or Motorola of course, but Moto's are already very close to stock with almost as fast updates (or sometimes faster!).
I just want to make a point here regarding price. We all can agree that the Moto X is the most well-built phones out there considering what it intended to do. Why not reward the effort that it takes to achieve such a feat? You will rarely find any phone with the attention to detail that the Moto X has such as the signal quality, the water-resistant, the speaker quality, the slim-bezel and much more. Did you know that the Moto X/G contains a built in headphone amp(once tapped using a Faux kernel) can make listening experience comparable to a Wolfson-equipped phone? No other phone on the market has that (except for Samsung Exynos-equipped phones).
Since the topic is about the Nexus 5: beneath that S800 chip and display you're left with a underwhelming camera, poor speaker quality, bad battery life, underperforming signal strength(especially compared with the Galaxy S4, HTC One). Sure, one can simply bring up the price to justify those short-comings. But you know, one can also bring up the price to justify what makes the Moto X worth paying for considering Motorola has been good to its products and demonstrates innovation, rather than playing puppet to the spec/size wars. We know the Moto X+1 will come with at least a S800 chip which is good enough. If you back that up by a 1080 AMOLED display in a comfortable size and maintain everything that makes the Moto X so good for us....$400 seems more than a fair price and then some.

I do agree the Moto x is a better phone overall.
But....having had an X, and now the wife has it....cause I missed flashing and got an N5.....I'll disagree with a few things...for fun.
Yes, the Moto X design and build quality wins.
Cameras.....equal.
Battery life....nearly equal. For me and many others anyway. I averaged about 30 hours, with 6 and a half hours screen time on the X. On the N5 I average about 24 hours total and 6 hours screen time. With my same setup and usage on both.
Speaker....a bit better on the X.
Signal strength... For me, one bar better on the X only. I feared radio reception when I moved to the n5....and was pleasantly surprised. With my S2....the ONLY way where I live to make calls was outside. Texts sometimes too. And Data....no, never. With the X...no problems. And with the N5, no problems either. Tho it will cut out on and off on calls quicker than the X when the weather is messing with my signal. Lousy signal where I live.
So really, for me....they are fairly similar devices. With a small edge going to the X. But I got bored and got the N5. Lol

But then if you factor the touchless control, active display and no crackling noise when streaming music and that puts the motox ahead by a mile

While I miss not having to hit the power button to wake my phone.....I love my customizable notification led....different colors and speeds for different things. I prefer the light now for sure!
Yes, touch less is nice! I do use voice commands on the N5, but need to hit my shortcut to Google search first. Don't use Gel launcher.
And I don't have any crackling. Lol

Personally I didn't notice much difference in cameras other than a slightly better showing in the N5 camera due to the OIS.
Signal strength is leagues ahead of the N5 from personal experience. Calls used to cut in and out faster than a porn movie! It got so bad that I had to use my old S2 just for phone calls.
My Moto X hasn't ever cut in or out so far even when talking in my car at silly speeds.

My S2 was nearly unusable at home....aside from WiFi....data and radio only worked outside...and with my N5 I can walk all over the house. It is not quite as good as our X....but very close.

That's only useful as a charge indicator tho. Which i knew and have setup.
Its not a notification light.
I'm only in here looking around because I think my girlfriend needs to try a moto x. She traded her iphone 5c for a bb q10 and hates it. Now she can't afford to get an iPhone again and since she likes my nexus 5 were looking at nexus 4's used in our price range. The moto x being almost the same software wise other than some bonus stuff makes it look really worth the price used.
Anyway having the nexus 5 I definitely disagree with some of the statements here....
The one I will confirm is that the first week I had the phone I had a call quality problem but it was fixed when I got the 2nd of 3 updates I've received in the couple months I've had it. No more issues and the signal strength is almost exactly the same as a gs3 and gs4 mini that belong to coworkers and we were trying to make calls out in the bush. He had 2 bars and failed to make a call and I made the call on 0-1 bars successfully. Monitored signal for a bit as we were trying to find a place to get signal.
Battery life is great for me. 0% drain overnight with WiFi etc off. I get 2 days and 3-4 hours of screen time or in heavy use up to 5 hours screen on time. Not the best but not bad by my standards. Best phone I've had yet.
The speaker is much better than the HTC one S I used to have and I overall liked that phone.
The camera may not be the best and software could be better but its the best camera phone I've had yet.

Get her the X for sure. My wife loves hers! Never wants an iPhone again.
I don't personally see the point in anyone getting a nexus whatever over the X.....UNLESS they are rooter and romming types. Then the Nexus is definitely the way to go.
Best X experience is root, stock and Gravity Box.
The nexus is the first phone I've had for this long and not rooted. Stock android is awesome. They both have there pros and con's and I would be happy with either but I think you're right. The x would probably be the phone for her.

The Galaxy Nexus doesn't have the best components and it runs better on 4.4.2 than my Mom's Galaxy s4. I'm not worried about how this phone will handle the future versions of android.
I think that will be quickly realized: the age of the Gnex as the aging drivers can no longer handle the syscalls that the newer version of Android will require. At least by that time, the GS4 will be about $150-$200 on the market: perfect for the upgrade!
Well from what I understand android should be getting more lightweight as it updates. Problem is manufactures don't want to update old phones cause it conflicts with their sales goals. Unfortunately CM can only do so much. The MotoX is the closest thing I like to a nexus without having to CM a galaxy device.
Don't get me wrong, I liked the nexus, but I adore the MotoX. I've always liked Motorola and am thoroughly impressed with what they accomplished with this phone. I can't wait to see what they do with the next one regardless of how big it is

Well they keep saying each new version is supposed to be easier on resources, etc but it sure doesn't seem like it. Kk doesn't run any better on older devices than jb or ICS did and it's much slower than GB was. Seems like it keeps getting more and more resource hungry. It just isn't noticeable on higher end devices like the n5 or moto x. But what happens in a few years who knows. Sure most people want to be on to the next thing less than a year from now but I like the idea of being able to use the same phone in 4 years if possible. My laptop works as good today as it did when I bought it 4 years ago so I see no reason to buy a new one.

Get you gf the motox she'll love it. I bet you after using it you may even leave your nexus 5 for the X. Other than screen size I see no advantage to the nexus 5

1So here's the story.
Yesterday I dropped, my beloved, motox and broke the screen. So I scrambled on kijjiji to find a used one. I only managed to find 2,one guy was asking 260 and another guy was asking 340.
I decided to check my carrier to see if I was eligible for an upgrade. I was with an early upgrade fee (125), I thought this was great. So I clicked to search for a motox but Rogers doesn't sell it anymore. So I had to settle for a nexus 5 ($0 on 2 year renewal).
I've been playing with it for 2 hours and I already miss my motox, I can't wait to sell this thing and get the new motox (motox+1).
Pros of the nexus 5 over a motox:
Not much. I really have to struggle to put something here.
-Okay no carrier name in the notification shade.
-Timely updates.
-Grippy back.
-Lighter
Cons:
Everything.
-I miss touchless control (I miss being able to say 'OK Google now' from anywhere and it would respond)
-I miss touchless notifications
-I miss twist to launch camera (I didn't think I'd use this feature as much as I did). Its so handy to grab the phone and twist it and the camera is ready to shoot.
-I miss being able to press anywhere on the viewfinder to take a picture.
-camera controls are crap
-placement of power and volume buttons are to high up on the phone
