You need to unlock the bootloader to directly root 4.3.
If you don't want to do that or cannot, then you need to downgrade, root and flash a prerooted rom.

I believe you can't Root 4.3 , you have to root 4.2 then flash a 4.3 pre-rooted zip file.

Not through the usual channels. PC Companion, Sony Update Service or OTA don't work when your bootloader is unlocked. You have to use Sony Emma or the unnoficial Flashtool to update.
Edit - You're welcome. :)

You normally only get that error message when your bootloader is still locked.

Did you follow this guide? http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=2153261

The CF auto root kernel you're using is quite old and newer firmware will not boot when it's flashed. This is the kernel I used after I unlocked my bootloader - DooMLoRD's advanced stock kernel

If you're stuck, you can always restore your phone with Flashtool.
www.flashtool.net
Just download a stock FTF from the general section and flash it. That will get your phone booting again.

Edit - Here's a detailed guide on rooting 4.3 - How to root 4.3.

Well, no I didn't say that. I said that error message normally means the bootloader isn't unlocked.
Try installing Flashtool and use the fastboot mode it provides to flash the kernel I linked you to.

OK, so as the kernel successfully flashed this time, you already have CWM. When the Sony logo appears during boot, there will be a vibration and the notification led will change colour. Press volume + at that point to enter CWM.

Flash a stock FTF with Flashtool. I'm not sure what's going wrong here, as all the methods and tools you're using worked fine for me.
When you get back to a stock working system, just try again. :)

Does your phone boot now?
If it does, boot it up ,then enter *#*#7378423#*#* in the dialler, then enter Service Info, then Configuration.
What does it say under 'Rooting status'?
