Can anyone explain what flashing kernal does? I've been around Android for while, I know how to root, custom rom but I never really understood what flashing a kernal did, any help would be greatly appreciated.

The kernel is like a bridge for how programs can utilize hardware (ie; CPU/memory/etc). Anytime a program needs to complete a task, the kernel handles how to utilize the hardware for that task. Read this for a more in depth explanation.....

Wow, I didn't know the kernal had so much to do with it. I really appreciate the reply.

No prob. Take in mind that custom kernels can handle tasks differently and may be better on battery life. Just depends on how its coded. If you flash a custom kernel make sure to do a backup of your current ROM beforehand so you can revert back if you don't like custom kernel. Happy flashing! :D
