I'm stuck on 4.4. 4, and I've lost write protection off, thanks to the new update. I am still rooted, however, and would like to know if there is a way to do a nandroid backup while rooted, but without using safestrap.

Try online backup from play but without custom recovery you will not be able to restore. With wp on it may not work. If it makes a bu, you could browse the img partitions, there is an app for that.
