For longevity of earphones, I recommend never just shoving them in a pocket. Even a small softcase can extend their life by years. I get sad for people when their headphones die. I have issues, I guess.
On the player and files, once your headphone issue is worked out, you may want to try obtaining a few Flac or 320 kbps mp3 files for songs you already know well. The difference can be magic. If you want the most from the music, I also find Neutron to be the best music player I've heard on android.
Again, just opinions from a guy who really loves audio. I hope it helps some.
