It looks like you have no freespace. My /system partition has 228 MB used out of 238 MB;
Code:
# df
df

/data                  165M    21M   143M   4096
/marvell                 6M     5M   522K   512
/mnt/sdcard              6G     5G     1G   4096
/mnt/secure/asec         6G     5G     1G   4096

Try a hardware reset before doing anything else, hopefully it will restore the /system partition so there will be some free space available on it.

Yeahhh! I'm Root! Bloody bundled software! ;)

Yep, my problem was i had not enough space left on /system because of the bundled software.
Unluckly it fails silently :(

I can't post links (I'm still new) but here is my updater-script, just to be safe I copied the apk on the sd before doing it :)

updater-script
Code:
ui_print("--- Cleanup Bundled Apps ---");

show_progress(0.100000, 0);
delete("/system/app/apemap.apk");
show_progress(0.999900, 0);
ui_print("Clenup Complete!");
ui_print("Ready to root !");

apemap 2.76mb (I guess is there to avoid google to get sued again)

--- UPDATE ---

I performed the hardware reset so many times i lost the count, it dosen't free up any space.

I bought this phone on internet and I got it shipped, I do belived is for the German/Austrian market; a lot of the budled software as well as the stickers outside was in german.
Maybe German/Austrian users may experience the same problems i've got.

Here the full list, if you post me yours I will be glad to make a diff ;)

Good work .Cesar!
My phone does not have any bundled/brand specific software preinstalled, although it is simlocked on Orange Romania.

Here is the difference between our lists of installed apps:

--supplementary on my phone:
< Bluetooth_DUN.apk
< Bluetooth_DUN.odex
< Bluetooth_HID.apk
< Bluetooth_HID.odex
< Bluetooth_MAPSERVER.apk
< Bluetooth_MAPSERVER.odex
< Bluetooth_SAP.apk
< Bluetooth_SAP.odex
< Gmail.odex
< Maps.odex

--supplementary on your phone
> hrs_and_all_samapps_130.apk
> Samsung-Service-App_V1.1.50.apk
> SmartRunner_v2.0.0_premium_build_10090024.apk[/code]

Thanks for that fix, worked on my Xcover. Is it possible to install Clockworkmod on the Xcover? Will it work? Would love to make a complete backup of my phone.

I don't know if it can be usefull, but mine is network unlocked, do you need a dump of any of my files ? :)

All I know is ROM Manager allows you to choose between 2 other samsung phones, I haven't tried only mostly because I don't know is possible to brick it and how to revert it.

afaik, is possible to brick it only by replacing the bootloader, but I'm not that confident :)

Anything could help :)
If there is not too much trouble for you, I could use your dumps.
You can copy/paste the following line under a su-ed "adb shell":

Code:
mkdir /sdcard/bml_dumps; cd /dev/block; for x in bml*; do echo "Dumping /dev/block/$x"; dd if=/dev/block/${x} of=/sdcard/bml_dumps/${x}_dd.img; done; cd -

The dumps will be saved in /sdcard/bml_dumps directory.
You need approx. 1 GB free on your sdcard.
Before uploading the files, put them in a zip file with max. compression. The size of the archive will be around 320 MB.
Please do this only if you have a very good internet connection, otherwise you will waste a lot of time.

Thanks!

Mmm... not a great idea... try like this:

0- Connect you phone with the usb cable and make sure you have "USB debugging" on.
1- run "adb shell"
2- type into the shell "ls /system/app > /sdcard/applist.txt"
3- post the content of the file into a [ CODE] ... [CODE\] block
4- cross your fingers :)

I made a single zip (7z for better compression) with the biggest files and a global one for the remaining :)
Btw, you where right and I noticed the my adsl is not that stable, anyway I downloaded em and they looks good.

Hi,

did someone try this one here
( hmm no link possible, google for "KERUK (~k0k0's Easy Rooting and Updating Kit)" ) ???
you need aprox. 3MB free system space.

Tut:
How to apply:
-------------

1. Copy the file "update.zip" to the root folder of your memory card
2. Shutdown your device
3. Boot your device into recovery menu
4. Select "apply update from sdcard" and choose "update.zip"
5. Select "reboot system now" => Finished!

What's done:
------------

BusyBox (1.19.3) => added
RootExplorer.apk (2.18.0) => added
sqlite3 (3.7.2) => added
su (3.0.3.2) => added
Superuser.apk (3.0.7) => added

looks interessting.

I dont have the phone to test, but i want it to bye for my wife :)

Well, if you read the whole thread, you'll notice that the other package does pretty much the same but is tested and working :p
Moreover, afaik RootExplorer.apk is a paid app

:) i read the whole thread this morning ( only 6 sites come one ^^ )
but i think is an pretty easy way without edit some files a.s.o.

and the other version doesn´t work 100% or?

correct: rootexplorer is a paid app, no problem for me i bought this app.
if you gooled my keywords so will find also this in the stash:

root only minimal (228kB Systemspace needed)

What's done:
------------

su (2.3.2-efgh) => added
Superuser.apk (2.3.6) => added

Requirements:
-------------

A memory card in your Smartphone, a working recovery menu and at
least 228 KiB of free space at the system partition. Nothing else!

Hint:
-----

Updating the meanwhile outdated Superuser.apk as well as the su
binary is highly recommended.

Installing the BusyBox is also recommended, but not essential.

_____________________________________________________

also you can load unroot.zip there :)

Feel free to test it. i wait for your answer.

Thx man

You're gold Cesar, thanks a lot for the dumps! Already downloading them ;)

Just one more question: you told me that your phone is not simlocked, but was it in this state as it came out from the factory, or was it unlocked after sale?

Have a nice w/e!

Well, the seal on the little white box was intact and the phone looks unbranded.
However, as we saw, have been equipped with some bundled software, but it looked to me country based, rather then operator based.

Here is where I got it:

The seller is Vipmovil and UPS packed up the phone in Spain.

Thank you , but is not working :(, app could not install.

Anyone who doesn't find Samsung usb driver here it is http://downloads.k0k0.de/index.php?dir=MobilePhones%2FDevices%2FSamsung%2F - Mr.AFK directed me on this page

Well, I have no idea if this is going to work, but if you manage to run your phone in recovery mode (and if you trust me more than how much I trust myself, I haven't tested it ^_^ ) I made up a little update package to try to restore your apps.
Honestly I have no idea if is going to damage anything, but I don't think so, the idea it's pretty simple: it basically restore all your apps located in /system/app (well, acutally, my apps).

It might work... it might destroy everything... your call :)

Ask a second opinion :)

    I've finally managed to root the son of a *****! I used the Universal GB Root kit but with a small modification: I've added the GT-S5690 phone model to the getprop statements at the beginning of the file "META-INF\com\google\android\updater-script" assuming that it should work as well on this Samsung model. Well... it did work!

    Here is the patched version of Universal GB Root:
    Universal_GB_ROOT_v5_patched_for_S5690.zip
    Mirror:
    http://uploading.com/files/8m63916d/Universal_GB_ROOT_v5_patched_for_S5690.zip/

    Here is the code (in red) that I've added to the "META-INF\com\google\android\updater-script":
    Code:
           getprop("ro.product.product") == "GT-B7510"[COLOR="Red"] ||
           getprop("ro.product.device") == "GT-S5690" ||
           getprop("ro.build.product") == "GT-S5690"[/COLOR]
           );

    Please post some feedback here, whether you succeed or not to root the phone using this workaround. I will let StoneBoyTony know about this, so he can integrate it in the official release of the Universal GB Root tool, if the solution proves to be stable and usable (so far I am the first to confirm that it works).

    Regards,
    Cristian

    Hello , to get into recovery mode i tried this :

    - press volume up, home button and power, then release power button and keep the rest until recovery mode appears.

    Tried so far (without success):
    zergRush -> failure (operation not permitted)
    DooMLoRD_v3_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su -> failure
    SuperOneClick v2.3.3 -> failure
    adb reboot recovery (stock recovery), install update from sdcard, Universal_GB_ROOT.zip -> failure

    My S5690 is running Android 2.3.6
    baseband: S5690XXKL3
    kernel: 2.6.35.7 official.alkon@androide #25
    version number: GINGERBREAD.XXKL3
    CSC: S5690OXFKL2
    simlocked on: orange romania

    Please help!
    My intention is to actually remove the SIM lock, but I need access to nv_data.bin in order to search for the unlock code.

    Regards.

    Patched it to make it work on Latin American version (S5690L)

    This will also work on S5690.

    xenux55: most likely you have an incomplete file. Please test it on your PC using WinZip/7Zip or any other archive manager BEFORE you try to install it via the phone's recovery interface.

    uhugyorgy: are you sure that bml15 is the file in charge with the sim lock on Galaxy Xcover S5690 phone model?
