SIM Unlocked and Bootloader Unlocked are 2 totally different things. Just because you can bounce between carriers doesn't mean your bootloader came unlocked.
As far as I know, NO manufacturer unlocks their bootloaders out of the box. Some are easily unlockable (like the Nexus). But they don't do it automatically from the factory.
I didn't read the article but with our G2's, we bypassed the bootloader with a patch. If you bypass the gate, you don't need the key.

Basically worse case scenerio is that every Dev that creates a custom rom will have to pair it with its own "special" kernel with that has a "key" OR disables the check for the key entirely (which is probably what they'll do first off)
This just says there is something in the Kernel that creates a 256bit encrypted key of all the files on the device. If you add files or change files, the key changes and won't boot.
The only people who this effects are people that are completely locked down and can not flash anything, even if they somehow got root access. Some phones can get root, but can't flash recoveries and stuff.
So no worries with the G2. But I would be very leery on buying a device in the future on day 1 until the devs can figure it out whether they can flash a custom recovery or not.
