yeah.. make sure you guys are following the steps on that wiki AFTER you get rc29/rc7 working to upgrade to modified versions (jf's) rc30/rc8 so that you do not lose it in the next few days from the OTA updates.

for whoever couldnt get telnet working, try this:

on a freshly booted rc29/rc7 phone, at the desktop type: <enter> <enter> telnetd <enter>
(do not forget the d after telnet)
then try to connect via telnet (either on your local network via wifi or with the telnet app. If it says unable to connect, do the <enter> <enter> telnetd <enter> part again over and over till it works. Nobody ever figured out why, but sometimes telnetd starts up and closes (we cant see the output so we dont know why) and re-starting it can help (this happened to me when doing these steps on a friends G1).

You are a legend! At last I can get Root and then the modified RC8!!

If I could kiss you I would!!! hehe ;)

Both of these NBH files were leaked/sourced by (as far as I can tell) Chavonbravo. Direct your kisses to him/her :D I just reposted in the new thread as his original link was buried in a somewhat different topic thread.

It's a nice day to own a G1.

This means it can also be used to make Phone Stock RC29 with SPL, Radio, Recovery and Boot setted as Company things

Fastest way to make Stock RC29 for Warranty Purpose

Stupid Question

Am I correct in assuming that the downgrade will erase all data on my G1?

You've been around 2 years almost and don't know the answer to that?!
Downgrading will wipe data, after you obtain root... upgrading to modified RC30 will not lose data. so after downgrading, feel free to reinstall whatever and then upgrade to mod RC30 for root access usage.

Forgive me for asking this, but potentially what am I able to do once I have root access? Is all this worth it and for what? I used to have a WinMo phone and was absolutely obsess with modding it, but the G1 is different. I like the way it is. But what will root access do for me?

I think you need root to make the changes which is why you need to downgrade from RC30 to RC29 to take advantage of the root bug.

To downgrade using this NBH file: http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Root_For_RC30
To gain root access: http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Rooting_Android
To flash the recovery and install modified rc30: http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Keeping_Root
Engineering bootloader for G1: http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=455860

Follow those steps, for #2 you dont need to do the beatbox mod and for step #3 use JKv1.3 instead of 1.2, then I added a step, flashing the Engineering Bootloader. Once you do those steps you will be good to go, I did this for the first time ever last night following those directions and it worked for me, and thats with my changes to the process. It took me reading through the directions like 50 times before I tried it but I went slowly and carefully and it went flawlessly.

once you have root also and the dev bootloader you will be able to flash custom "cooked" versions of the "stock" images meaning jesus freak made rc30 1.3 which also has auto rotating browser... and other features. if you dont have root and are willing to keep what Google gives you. And tmo mo shoves down your throat then dont do it but id say do it now until you are not able to do it again for quite some time.

my opinion the stock browser blows goats and Steel is much better...

Thanks. Two years on reading XDA forums don't create a new brain.

Can someone stick a copy of this post so newbies new where to start from?

At long last. I'm gonna try this out. I would just like to point out that most of the files hosted on the wiki already seem to be down. The only one I can get is the one titled "happynewyear.zip". still though, 42meg of possible rootness. Joy surely has bestowed us all this holiday season. *Cheesey laughter* ;)

EDIT:

I noticed someone mentioned Steel. Good call. By far the better browser. I mean, google won't even allow a simple .zip file to download. What does the dialogue say now? Something like "please f*c* off, your phone does support this file but you can't have it... haha... thanks, your friendly google team". Or something to that effect. Hehe. ;)

Steel wins hands sown. :)
