Had the same problem with my PC. Downloaded it directly to my phone with no problems.
I just want to get towel root so I can study more to figure out what I'm doing before I jump... Seems it's no fun going back if you have regrets.

You don't have to donate... The lamda is the symbol in the middle of the page. Just click it and it should download. Or your welcome to use my one drive link. It should work as well. Its just a few posts back.

It was .apk not a zip. I just have ocd I guess and decompile most apks to cross reference ...

If I did one of the downgrade methods and used a pre-rooted stock ROM, is there any advantage to flashing the NC5.tar and rooting with this method? I don't flash ROMs anymore, just run stock?
If you are already rooted, not really any advantage. The only one I can think of is if you go back to stock and root this way there is no dealing with safestrap. As great as it is the boot screen and other parts can be pretty annoying.

Safestrap still gives you the ability to backup and restore if that matters

I feel this is only helpful when trying out new ROMs. Personally I would rather redo from scratch of I'm having issues, only takes me an hour or so.
Sorry for newbie questions, but is a/the common folder one created by me off me and if so where is appropriate to create it?
Also once done can I simply install supersu from the playstore?

WOW! That's the easiest root method I've ever used. Install app, click one button, wait 15 seconds, phone reboots, you're rooted. Re-install Super SU and have fun.
Great! None of the temporary root issues?
Everything seems to work?
No Loss of contacts etc "I have nearly 1000"
Ok to install from SD recommended?

Edit @geohot has made a root method that works. All you have to do is go to http://towelroot.com and click the icon in the center to download tr.apk . Install the tr.apk after allowing installation from unknown sources. The click the button to root and the phone will reboot and you will have root. I recommend you download the updatesupersu1.99 zip and install the supersu from the common folder after extracting.5
That vulnerability is going to be like Cube's getroot - it's going to work on a huge number of devices.
I've been looking on how to exploit it but haven't had much time to devote to it, but apparently it's been cracked for at least one phone.
We'll have native root on the S4/S5 and who knows what else pretty soon if I'm not mistaken. Good news.4

This particular vulnerability is an interesting one, with a good potential for exploit. It is not going to be easy to exploit across a large number of phones.3I couldn't care or less if they release this root method. We already have several pre rooted ROMs with kitkat. I understand the exploit could be easier to root but I don't care how long it takes to root. I just want an unlocked bootloader. If anything we need to get more people to add to the bounty to maybe attract attention. And get as many devs working on it as possible. I am sure surge is probally getting tired of working on this for so long. It's been close to a year and nothing since loki. I bought my s4 because I thought it could be unlocked but I bought it just around the time Verizon patched loki which sucks
