I bought a portable minidisc player in 1996 from Japan since they weren't released where i live.

I found an email adress to a japanese dude somewhere in a personal minidisc information site in japaneese and asked him if he could buy one and ship to me.
"Sure!" he said and i wired all the money directly to his bank account.
A couple of weeks later it arrived, perfectly packed and everything in order.

The "online" in this story is the emailing part i guess, but there werent much other options to online purchases back then.
