ok the point of "rooting" is to get max control of the phones file system the most often use of this is to load a custom recovery menu which is used to flash a custom o.s "rom" to the phone
on click root use this to root it "very easy n.b at the end of the process if done well you should see a donate option if you dont try again with memory stick mounted to usb that worked for me".
"if the program didnt install "super user app for you download it from app store or where ever"
after you root it go to app store or just download a app named "rom manager" you should see an option to flash custom recovery "clockwork mod" under good net connection do this and let it run.
good now you have a custom recovery shut down phone and press power button and home to enter recovery.
now you want to load a custom rom on the phone there are many out there to choose from that u can find on this very site
you are just getting started but you are in the correct place there are lots of tutorials here
this is just a push in the correct dirction
oh and for all android drivers "you will need them" use the android SDK.  google that one
