Well, it's not an advanced phone like the Vibrant, Epic, or others where we have clockwork mod recovery. The only download mode I know is the f5/R button. I'm surprised Rom manager actually installed on this phone. I guess try to Google an answer or try different combos like we do on the Vibrant like hold the volume down button and the power button, or hold down volume down and up button and hold the power button. Kind of like holding the f5/R button and power to get into recovery.

Nope, I got nothing. Google wasn't my friend today. Found a whole bunch of Samsung screen replacement videos and tutorials but not for Samsung SGH-T589 Gravity Smart.

Might I suggest taking your phone apart since it's pretty much bricked anyways and look and see how the screen is and maybe it won't look too hard. Just use your best judgement.

I'm going to look on craigslist and see if I can find a reasonable phone repair guy. I got a quote from a shop on the bricked phone for $50. I imagine I can probably find someone on Craigslist to do it for $20-30, which would be worth it.

I swapped motherboards and now have a working phone. Im trying to flash this ROM but the instructions left out the aprt where you have to put the update.zip on the SD card. You also cant do it in windows because Windows only detects the Fat32 partition (until you reboot then it detects nothing). It appears you have to format the SD card, reboot your PC into Linux or with a linux boot disc, add the ROM to the EXT2 partition. I;m about to try that now. Ill let you know how it goes.

Hi gorilla,
Are you talking about my steps? You can do what you are trying to do via my guide. Step 2 tells you to download the update.zip file, put it on your SD Card, and then move your SD Card contents to your computer. Step 3 then details how to partition your SD Card and then how to move the files back onto the FAT32 partition that you made on your SD Card.

Right, I meant specifics as to how that works. It's kind of confusing if you haven't done it before, considering Windows doesn't want to cooperate with you much. I've tried putting it on both partitions, and get the same error everytime when trying to install.
I start by wiping the data/factory reset,
wipe cache,
"Apply sdcard:update.zip"
upon "opening update package..."
then I get "E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip (no such file to directory) Installation aborted)

What is strange though,m is even when I just went for the factory reset, it reboots and I get "The Application Setup Wizard (Process com.android.setupwizard) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. I then have a phone with the signal strength indicator, I receive tests, but a black desktop and cant open any apps or features. Luckily I can still select to enable USB mode.

Thank you very much for your help yesterday, the phone is running great. For others who may read this, I learned a few things yesterday...
If you are getting the error...
E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip (no such file to directory) Installation aborted)

It is most likely because you are using your phone as the SD card reader in Windows to partition the SD card. I would recommend a separate SD card adapter/reader (luckily my blackberry worked). We found that something was happening to the SD card somewhere between flashing it, checking the partitions and flashing the rom to the phone. We were eventually successful when we used an alternate device as the SD card reader, partitioned it using that device, then plugging it into my Samsung gravity Smart phone and going immediately to the recovery process. After doing some searching a few other people had the same issue. (I don't know if they figured it out)

Upon getting the ROM flashed and getting the phoen up and running, the EXT2 partition disappeared again. I later found some forums stating that Froyo doesn't support partitioned SD cards.
This only effects the Link2SD application.

We should also get a list of safely removable apps and system files. I saw this on another forum for this device, but I'm not sure where it was. After isntalling the ROM, I did still find some unnecessary stuff in ehre that could definitely be trimmed out. i.e. Swype, com.logmein, gmail, facebook, etc. I don't know if this has been done in alter developments of the "AMS Mod", but by recommendation of BlindWolf, I just went with the original version.

Yeah, I have no idea why that happened. I was able to do it with my friend's phone with no issue. Her card was a 4GB card and yours was 2GB.

That's great; I'm glad you got it up and running again. I also couldn't do the ext2 partition because Windows didn't recognize it so I just formatted my sd card in the phone, added the zip file to the sd card, and flashed to the custom rom. No big deal to me really with the ext2 partition although from what I've read it is very beneficial. It's my daughters phone though so I personally don't care.:D

Windows not recognizing the EXT2 partition and/or a second partition on an SD Card is NORMAL. There is nothing wrong with this. As I said in my guide, you don't need to access anything on that partition anyway.

Sorry for posting here - there is no forum for this device.

This is for the Samsung Gravity Smart T589.

This is a stock 2.2.2 froyo rom that is deodexed and themed.

This was built from a system dump - the firmware hasn't been released yet.
Please note that I am not a developer - just a tinkerer.
This will be installed by flashing through the stock recovery.
There are no custom recoveries available yet for this device.
This has the majority of the bloatware removed.
It will utilize the stock kernel already in the phone.
The ROM download link is provided after the screenshots.
A RAR file download link is provided with the apps that were removed.

    Details:

    Removed Drivesmart from Settings.
Removed Social Network Key from Settings - hotkey defaults to Facebook
Removed Messaging Key from Settings - hotkey defaults to Message App
    Removed Notification Slider from Settings
Removed Software Update from Settings - wont OTA a custom rom
Removed many ringtones and added a few.
Removed Startup sounds and Shutdown sounds.
    Removed Startup and Shutdown animations.

    Removed the following apps:

    Aim - Bejewled - Allshare - DriveSmart - Dual Clock - Cloud Text - Gallery3d - Glympse - Lookout -
MallLite - Maps - Memo - My Account - My Files - Photobucket - Protips - Sticky Message Widget -
    Street - Swipe Tips - Talk - Tetris - TeleNav - Uno - Youtube

    Added the following apps:

File Expert (has root explorer) - Flash Player - Latest Gmail - Htc Keyboard - Latest Link2sd -
QuickPic (gallery app) - Latest SuperUser + Latest Binaries - Busybox - Latest Terminal Emulator -
Latest Titanium Backup (free version) - Latest Spare Parts Plus

    Added 3 build.prop edits.
One for maximum events per second and the other two for sounds.
The default ringtone is from the movie "Crank" - the fading in and out phone tone.
The default notification sound is "Tinkerbell" - lol.
Added a custom boot animation - blue coin.
Added Sd Card speed tweak + battery tweak.
Themed several icons through the IC Menu.
Themed the framework to a black "Sense" theme.
    Themed the battery icons.

    • This device has very little internal space, so I have included Link2Sd app.
[*]If you wish to utilize this included app, you must do the following prior to installing the rom:

Partition the sd card as follows:

** NOTE - PARTITIONING THE SDCARD WILL ERASE THE CONTENTS **

    - first partition will be created as a <FAT32> <Primary> partition.
    - (leave about 512mb for the 2nd partition)

    - second partition will be created as a <Ext2> <Primary> partition.
    - this should be 512mb with 0 swap

    Installation instructions:

    - partition sd card (this will erase the contents)
    - download rom (which is an update.zip for the stock recovery)
    - put rom on the sd card
    - power off phone
    - slide open the keyboard and hold down the <T/5> button and the <Power> button until the recovery appears
    - use the <Volume Keys> to scroll to <wipe data/factory reset> and hit the <Power> button to confirm
    - use the <Volume Keys> to scroll to <wipe cache partition> and hit the <Power> button to confirm
    - use the <Volume Keys> to scroll to <apply update.zip> and hit the <Power> button to confirm
    - rom will install and reboot phone automatically
    - first boot will take a minute
    - open Link2Sd app - inform the app the 2nd partition is a <Ext2> partition and reboot phone
    - open Link2Sd app after reboot - hit the <Menu> key then click on <Settings> tab
    - check the <Auto Link> box and click on <Install Location> and click <Internal>
    - most apps downloaded from market will default to the sd card
    - you will have to open Link2Sd app after installing apps and move the app back to the phone
    - then you will have to click each installed app in Link2Sd interface and click on <Create Link> and link all thats permitted
    - this will solve the majority of the limited space issue with this phone

    NOTES:

This phone seems to operate best when the CPU frequencies are set to 320 min and 800 max.
We can't overclock the phone until a kernel is developed. Samsung hasn't release the kernel or firmware yet.
Download No Frills Cpu from the market and set the frequencies to those specs.
The phone is defaulted to 245 min and whatever it needs up to 800.
At 245 minimum, it uses more battery power to "wake" and if it wakes frequently at this setting,
it really adversely effects battery performance.

    1
the cdn version indeed is the galaxy q.. just like ours is the same line of phones..

so yes i cant see why flashing wouldn't work..

the only thing that comes to mind would be changing the apn settings.. im not sure

but i dont think you will get a data signal since me and arhtard are running on with

tmobile with a sim...if you have tmobile great if not and running a diff provider and hopefully not cdma... so thats probably the only issue i can for see.. as i flashed this rom with

    zero error.
    1
I can provide ROM hosting if you guys would like. :)

The friend who I installed this for wants DriveSmart back on the phone. How can I put it back on? I saw the link with the removed APKs but I just noticed that it also hooks into Settings.

Lastly can we flash AMS 0.1 beta (above) over the current custom ROM without issue? (e.g., no factory reset)
    1
I was pretty excited when I came across this thread as I've been looking for a better ROM for my Gravity Smart phone. It is the sole reason for me registering for this website. I am however a little confused :confused:as I originally saw this thread and it appears to be the original, however I see a newer thread was started and has the later mod releases. However, this thread has the most recent posts. Which thread should I be following? Also could someone please direct me to the instructions for flashing this ROM. Thanks.
Hi Gorilla! I am assuming you're using Windows and have administrative privileges on your computer.

Special thanks to Arhtard of course. I basically cleaned up his original guide from his first post and added some extra stuff for good measure. Screenshots and more detailed info about the ROM are still there on his first post.

EVERYONE: PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ADD/CORRECT THIS POST AS NEEDED. I WILL MOST LIKELY NOT MAINTAIN THIS POST. THANKS!

***You will need an SD Card Reader as I think this phone likes to corrupt SD Cards that have two partitions on them***

    ----------
    STEP 1: UNHIDE WINDOWS FILES
    ----------

First you need to make sure we're showing all files. You can safely leave this setting as-is once you're done.

    1) Click Start
    2) Click Control Panel
    * In Windows XP double click Folder Options or click on Appearance and Themes and then click on Folder Options
    * In Windows Vista double click on Folder Options or click on Appearance and Personalization and then click on Folder Options
    * In Windows 7 double click on Folder Options or click on Appearance and Personalization and then click on Folder Options
    3) Select the View tab at the top of the new window
    4) Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders
    5) Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) checkbox
    6) Click Yes on the warning dialog that pops up
    7) Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types checkbox
    * In Windows 7 only: Uncheck the Hide empty drives in the Computer folder checkbox
    8) Click Apply
    9) Click OK to close the window

    ----------
STEP 2: DOWNLOAD ROM AND BACKUP SD CARD
    ----------

Now we need to download the ROM itself and backup the SD Card.

    1) Go to this link:
    http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1320187
    2) On the first post of the thread there will be a ROM download link. Click it.
    3) You should be prompted to download a file by the name of "update.zip". Download it.
    4) Once finished plug your phone into your computer
    5) Mount the USB storage to read the SD Card
    6) Move the "update.zip" file to the root of your phone's SD Card. Do not rename the file.
    7) Make a new folder on your computer called "Phone Backup"
    8) Copy (do not "cut or "move") your data from your phone's SD Card into your new "Phone Backup" folder
    9) Check the backup to make sure everything copied correctly! :)
    10) Do not unplug the phone from your computer just yet

    ----------
STEP 3: PARTITION YOUR SD CARD
    ----------

Why do we need to do this? We're going to use the second partition on your SD Card as extra space for your phone because this phone doesn't have a lot of space.

    1) Download and install this program: (MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition)
    http://download.cnet.com/3001-2094_...c6a4c69ad900b2c3b0d44732bd5ae&part=dl-6285158
    2) Run MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition
    3) You should see your disks listed. Look for your SD Card.
WARNING: STEP 7 BELOW WILL (EVENTUALLY) FORMAT YOUR SD CARD OR ANY DISK YOU SELECT. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE SELECTING THE RIGHT DISK BEFORE CONTINUING.
    4) You want to right-click on the actual picture of the disk in the row that your SD Card is listed in and select Delete All Partitions
    5) Confirm
    6) Right-click on the long, empty, gray bar (aka "(Unallocated)") which represents empty space for your SD Card and select Create to create a new partition. You're going to do this TWICE in total. Since Windows can only see one partition for a removable disk (like an SD card) the second partition we're going to make can't be read in Windows, but that's perfectly fine as there won't be any files we need to access on there anyway.
    * The first partition should be PRIMARY, (under "Create As") a FAT32 File System and have 512 MB of Free Space after it. (under "Unallocated Space After") There should be no space listed under "Unallocated Space Before".
    * The second and final partition should be PRIMARY, (under "Create As") a EXT2 File System and should be 512 MB in size. (under "Partition Size")
    * NOTE: As stated above the second partition that we made which is formatted in EXT2 cannot be read in Windows and cannot be assigned a drive letter. Don't worry about this as the phone won't store anything on that that you'll need to access later.
    7) Click Apply at the top-left of the window to confirm and FORMAT YOUR SD CARD. (You did choose the SD Card originally, right?!)
    8) Once everything is done, close MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition
    9) Copy (do not "cut or "move") the complete contents of your "Phone Backup" folder back onto your SD Card :)
    * DO NOT simply copy the "Phone Backup" folder from your computer to the SD Card. You need to go INSIDE the "Phone Backup" folder and copy everything from that folder into the root of the SD Card.
    * DO NOT delete the "Phone Backup" folder on your computer. Keep it there juuuuuuuuust in case you need it in the future.
    10) Safely Remove the phone from your computer
    11) Unmount USB storage from Android
    12) Unplug the phone from your computer

    ----------
    STEP 4: FLASH THE ROM
    ----------

    Time for some fun!

    1) Make sure your phone battery is full
    2) Power off your phone
    3) Slide open the keyboard
    4) Hold down the T/5 button on the keyboard
    5) While continuing to hold that key down, start holding the Power button down as well
    6) Eventually the phone should power on and show a Recovery screen
    7) You should be presented with a number of options. To navigate the menu use the volume up/down keys and the Power button to confirm a selection. :)
    8) Next, select "Wipe cache partition" and confirm.
WARNING: STEP 9 BELOW WILL WIPE YOUR PHONE.
    9) Select "Wipe data/factory reset" and confirm.
    10) Select "Flash update.zip" and confirm.
    11) After a bit, the phone should finish and should automatically reboot! :) Be patient!
    12) The phone will show a spinning Android coin. Please wait. The phone WILL take awhile to show a normal Android screen again.

    ----------
    STEP 5: CONFIGURE LINK2SD
    ----------

Link2SD is a special program on your phone that will utilize the 2nd partition we made earlier to free up space on your phone.

    1) If presented with a setup wizard, go through it until you get to a normal Android Home Screen.
    2) Go to All Applications and open Link2SD
Special Note: If Link2SD asks to enable USB Debugging, do it. :)
    3) The first time you open Link2SD you'll need to configure it. Just let Link2SD know that the first partition on the SD Card is FAT32 and the second is EXT2 and set the Swap Size to 0 if it asks.
    4) Link2SD should ask to reboot the phone. Go ahead and do it.
    5) Once the phone is rebooted open Link2SD, hit the Menu key on your phone and click on Settings
    6) Check the Auto Link checkbox
    7) Click on Install Location and click Internal
    8) Hit the Back key on your phone to go back to the Link2SD main screen
    9) Hit the Menu key on your phone and click on Filter
    10) Select User. If memory serves this will only show new applications you install on your phone so you aren't bogged down with system apps in your list.
    11) Close Link2SD

    ----------
STEP 6: A NOTE ABOUT MARKET APPS AND THIS PHONE
    ----------
    • Don't move system applications like the Android Market or Link2SD to the SD Card as I have no idea what will happen. :)
    • When installing applications from the Android Market those that don't have native App2SD card support will be installed on the second partition on your SD Card automatically.
    • However, those that DO have native App2SD card support will still utilize phone memory. To move it to the SD Card fully, you'll need to open Link2SD after installing the application in question and move the application back to the phone. You'll then need to click Create Link and check all the boxes that you can.
    • If the phone complains about low space I noticed rebooting the phone helps most of the time.

    ----------
    STEP 7: SLIGHT CPU TWEAK
    ----------
This one is easy! Download No Frills CPU (it's free!) from the Android Market and set the frequencies to the following:
    Max. clock freq.: 800
    Min. clock freq.: 320

Check the Apply on boot and Show notification on boot and click Apply and Exit and then reboot your phone. You should see that No Frills CPU will apply these new settings each time you boot up allowing you to gain better speed and battery life. :)

I have no idea what the other settings will do so don't touch them! :)

    :) :) :) HAVE FUN! :) :) :)
