As I am researching, I found out that after pressing *#*#7378423#*#* in dialer>service info>software info, it says that phone system version is @ 4.1.B.0.431 generic user and my file system is at WORLD-i 4.1.A.562. Why is this so? In my settings>about phone>android version still at 4.0.3..

I think you must do REPAIR operation from PC Companion and make a clean upgrade to 4.0.4.

Then if you want to root, do the steps as stated in this thread.

Yes Its a critical decision to unlock the bootloader.

But, I taught that if I am in this forum than I must do this.
Because this option is a must do for some operations.

I'm confused. Solution from the 1st post is meant to work with locked bootloader?
So bootloader needs to be unlocked prior to using this root method or not?
Thanks.

Im done with rooting using the steps in the 1st post, and as a Superuser I managed to use hansip87 tutorial on optimizing our Ray. I followed the steps and delete some of the USELESS BLOATWARES last night. This morning as I check on the Android version, I am surprised that I'm back again to 4.0.3. Doing again the *#*#7378423#*#*, phone system version is @ 4.1.B.0.431 generic user and my file system is at WORLD-i 4.1.A.562. So, I restore my phone using my back-up of 4.0.4 and now I am confused on removing again some of the BLOATWARES..

Any suggestion guys? Please advise me if this post is still in line with the topic here.

Hi all!

This how-to applies for locked bootloader phones.

What you will need?
ICS 4.0.3 ftf: http://www.4shared.com/rar/2Lf1ikwm/ST18i_41A0562.html
ICS 4.0.4 ftf: http://www.mediafire.com/?2o2glqbm6oyf9m9
Root_v5 hack: http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1600728
CWM installer: http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1346190

Preliminary step:
= First off, install full ICS 4.0.4. You have to be on ICS 4.0.4 in order to proceed.
= The easiest way to do so is to use Flashtool to flash 4.0.4 ftf and DE-SELECT wipe data! Thus your current apps will be kept.
= By installing 4.0.4, if you had root, you will lose it. But worry not, here is what you should do:

Follow this 3-step process:
1) By using the Flashtool flash only the kernel (kernel.sin + loader.sin) from ICS 4.0.3
= For flashtool, Unknown Sources and Debugging must be checked in phone settings
= Put the ftf file into the firmware directory of flashtool (usually c:/Flashtool/Firmware), open flashtool and select flash, then flashmode, chose the 4.1.A.... firmware and select exclude Fota, system and baseband , select 'No final verification' and DE-SELECT wipe data, cache and apps log. Click OK and follow instructions (power off phone, press volume down button and plug the usb).

2) Boot the phone and do regular Root_v5 hack + CWM installation (CWM-5.0.2.7-nAa-r2)
= When it's finished you can root with the Root_v5 tool following its instructions
= Now install CWM recovery by using the CWM Installer following its instructions

3) By using the Flashtool flash only the original kernel from the ICS 4.0.4 provided ftf.
= For flashtool, Unknown Sources and Debugging must be checked in phone settings
= Now do the same operation as 1) with 4.0.4 ftf file and you're done.

Enjoy!
p.s. Thanks to Frakkia and others for useful tips.

This solution is for LOCKED bootloader.
U don't need to unlock the bootloader.. I manage to root using the steps in the 1st post.. If you've unlocked it already, it's your choice.. Having problems also about the Android version after doing some OPTIMIZATION but it's okey now..

I haven't tried on unlocking bootloader...:)

Edit.

I think I finally get what i miss, it is on the build.prop. Recently, I just replace the build.prop(in 4.0.4) with the edited one from 4.0.3( with additional tweaks).

Sorry guys.

    Hello
I do not understand everything. But I absolutely want my rooter Ray!
    My Bootloader is locked
    I am already in 4.4
how to lfashe the kernel (kernel.sin loader.sin +) 4.0.3 from ICS
and where can I find these elements.
how to flash the original kernel from the ICS 4.0.4 Provided ftf.
    and or find these elements?

How to use Flashtool, i need your help :)

    thank you

    download 4.0.3 here: http://www.4shared.com/rar/2Lf1ikwm/ST18i_41A0562.html
    download 4.0.4 here: http://www.mediafire.com/?2o2glqbm6oyf9m9
    download root installer here: http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1600728
    and cwm with this: http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1346190

Now, put the two rom files into the firmware directory of flashtool (usually c:/Flashtool/Firmware), open flashtool and select flash, then flashmode, chose the 4.1.A.... firmware and select exclude Fota, system and baseband , select 'No final verification' and DE-SELECT wipe data, cache and apps log. Click ok and follow instructions (power off phone, press volume down button and plug the usb).
When it's finished you can root with the tool for root following instructions(it needs 3 reboots if i don't make mistakes)
Now install cwm (first you need to install busibox with busybox installer in playstore).
Now do the same operation with firmware 4.0.4 and you're done.

It's easier to do then explain:D

I've the same problem,if I flash only the kernel from 4.0.4 as the guide tell I remain on 4.0.3,so I flashed the system to,in that case I get the 4.0.4 but lost root.
Another thing: can do the same with European firmware? Or Nordic? Tx in advantage.

First you must have 4.0.4 on phone. I have updated my 4.0.3 via PCC to 4.0.4 (and I lost root). Then I made my own ftf.
If you have (non rooted) 4.0.4 on ray, than follow steps in #1. post

ps. Sorry for my bad english

Hi, i've tryied this guide, but if i does the same thing with 4.0.4 (flash only kernel) i remain on 4.0.3...
    Where i make mistake?

    The first post is updated.
