Any increase beyond the 450/460 ish mark we are seeing now would be a huge drain on battery with no perceptible differences to the user.

I fear the industry will go ahead and do it anyway. Samsung almost certainly will, and the rest of the industry will follow suit.
500-600DPI.. all the extra drain on the GPU and battery... Heh, why not?
Of course, in the future you might want a 4K screened device because you'll be mirroring the screen on your 4K TV, but we're quite a way off doing that.. and even though you can mirror full HD today, I bet few people do it (and using Miracast, it results in a noticeable drop in performance anyway).
