Give me until tomorrow. At work I have a Windows XP VM I can play with and try and figure it out.
I think though that in Windows XP it won't try, at least not in the same way that Windows 7 does.
Windows 7 will go out to the Internet and attempt to find the drivers. Windows XP usually prompts for a disk.
But let me work on it tomorrow and get back to you.

Cheers
I found it. Right click on "my computer" -> Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager. My netbook was choking on Windows Vista/7/8 so I rolled it way back.

Sorry about this could anyone out of the kindness of their heart point me to how to restore when you format system? ADb push or Odin don't work. The PC doesn't seem to recognize phone.
