I've downloaded the update you linked.
Basically, boot.img.p is an img file and .p extension may stay for "patch" (or similar). The update-script flash it as a normal boot.img!

Anyway, according to the project cheesecake instructions, under linux shell you have to run:

strings bootloader.img | grep -i unlock
If something is found (i.e. the command print an output).
I tried (replacing bootloader.img to boot.img.p, obviously) and nothing was found, so this update doesn't unlock our defy.
