Quick question - is there any way to change the phone from presenting emoji as Samsung's super shiny stuff to Google's emoji they built into Hangouts/KitKat?

If impossible system-wide, at least in Hangouts? Hangouts itself shows the normal emoji in the menu, but when you click on it to send it, it presents the Samsung shiny version in the text box.

To replace your Samsung emoji with the Google ones. Download the Google emoji file here

https://mega.co.nz/#!3EAwXJJD!uN8YZdhwjv1XbBIBjQdPFmvbJ2H-EO07V8GLcuNYSJw

Using a root explorer goto system/fonts and backup NotoColorEmoji.ttf and now replace with the one you just downloaded set the correct permissions rw-r-r. Then reboot. This will replace samsung emoji with the Google ones system wide. Just remember to backup your old one in case you want to restore.

Is it possible to do this without root?

I'm amazed you want to change them. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that I didn't have to look at the melted blob Google ones anymore :)

Tapped it!
