How to change your "Me" picture in stock messenger app

Okay this is REALLY starting to bug the heck outa me, anyone know how to change that normal plain profile pick in stock messenger to something else? (Picture: The things that are circled in red)

    Mine is my Google+ picture.

    Contacts app --> Select the contact under "Me" (first one with your name on it) --> Press the edit pencil at the top right corner --> Tap the icon next to (left of) where you edit your name --> Choose photo
