the og evo 4g was my first. I was nervous as hell and flashed to cm 6.1 if i remember right and ive been a flashing junky since.

Same here! I waited that long because it was my first Android smartphone and I wanted to read up and get familiar with all the terminology, like "rooting" "flashing" "ODIN" "bricking" etc

Plus, I didn't just look into rooting the phone, I wanted to also make sure I knew how to recover from an accidental soft-brick, just in case.
