[Q] Downloads DRM Protected content storage uses data but what is it
I searched the forum, but I couldn't find an answer to what exactly Downloads DRM Protected Content storage is or does.
I'm using 3G watchdog to monitor my data usage, because I'm on a very tight data limit (50MB). I configured my GS3 so it uses as little data as possible and normally my usage is ~1MB per day. A few days back I noticed that I had already used 3,5MB midday (3G watchdog widgets turning orange/red and everything). When I checked my Usage by application (in 3G watchdog) I could see that the process eating the data was:
DRM Protected Content Storage
Then when I checked the android Data Usage setting I couldn't see the Downloads DRM entry but saw a Google play store entry instead which used more or less the same amount of data. So I guess the DRM process must be related to Google play store. I decided to leave it for now and see if it would return or if it was just a one time event. After 5 days my 3gWatchdog widgets turned orange again and the guilty party was again the Downloads DRM process.
I searched for the phenomenon on the XDA forums and could see a few DRM entries related to 'extreme battery usage' or 'eating tons of data' but mostly they where dated 2010/2011 and none of the entries really explained what exactly this process is doing. And how to prevent it from doing so.
Even though it is not eating tons of data in my case (just 3,5MB). I very much would like to know what this process is and if at all possible prevent it from using my valuable bandwidth? Hopefully somebody can help me out. Help is much appreciated.
