Hey guys. having bit of a noob at this, having bit of problem running the .apk.. everytime i try to install the apk my iconia giving me an error.

Parse error "there is a problem parsing the package"..

any idias? thanks

It gives you this error if you try to install the package on 3.0.1 (at least on mine does). After I had 3.1 flashed, the root package installed (and worked) perfectly.

This tool installs su and superuser.apk for stock HC 3.1

As the old root method does not work anymore I created this new tool.

How to root
1. Goto Settings->Applications and enable "Unkown sources"
2. Download the attached APK file
3. Copy the file to your Iconia
4. Install the APK & start the tool
5. Click "root"
6. Enjoy :)

How to unroot
1. Start the tool & click "unroot"

NOTE
- This was tested only with Acer_A500_3.019.04_COM_GEN1 but will probably work with any other version.
- By clicking root, you agree that you do this at your own risk. The tool will uninstall any previous installed superuser.apk.

Thanks
@ChainsDD for superuser.apk and su
@Acer for this buggy tool :)
Thank you so much :)

Extreme newbie in the rooting arena. Care to share for newbie level? I kicked myself for ever for not rooting my HTC Hero (now Nexus S). I'm not going to make the same poor choice with my tablet.

V 3.0.1

I Rooting for Android 3.1

Way to go, this is the great program I have seen. It makes the Iconia A500 worth having. Acer should send you a sales bonus check!!!

A program that makes a device more useful is a program worth having!!!

ota update

I ran this against us ota update and doesn't give me root. I may have messed up because I didn't unroot before updating. Any thoughts?

Can someone who is unable to root with this tool please PM me a logcat after he pressed "root"?

Also, have you unrooted your device before?

Sadly I forgot to unroot before (my fault).
I can do a logcat in a few hours.

What I see is that after pressing "root" there is su placed in system/xbin/ and the superuser.apk is installed. Anyhow root doesn´t work.

And if you click "unroot", both files disappear?

Can you please do "ls -l /system/xbin/su" and check the permissions?

Yes, if I click "unroot" both files disappear but IconiaRoot gives a error message: "Something went wrong.. you are still rooted?!?!"

The permissions are rwsr-sr-x
I can see that in RootExplorer (of course without the ability to change something)

I also made a logfile but I don´t know how to send it via pm?

Thank you so far.

Regarding the log file you have these options:
- upload it to e.g. dropbox and pm me the link
- paste the content in a PM (if the file isn't too large)
- send me a PM and I'll send you my email address.

Pleaese additionally check if there is some other su binary in /system/bin.

Yep, in /system/bin there is a su binary, too.

Ok, thanks for the log. I think the additional binary might be the problem. If you have adb, can you please try the following?

Code:
adb shell
/system/xbin/su -

After you typed this, do you get the notification by superuser.apk on your device?

I installed the second version of the root iconia root 1. everything worked fine untill i tried to install busybox. it screwed up my root and would ask for root privilige more than once for each item i tried to open. I uninstalled busybox and iconiaroot1. reinstalled iconia root, and rerooted. this time with no busybox and everything works

btw, in the rooted stock 3.1, is itsmagic still works ? and we can install clockworkmod ? thx b4

Yes, itsmagic still works. I installed thor's recovery and it is working fine.

Just remove this install-recovery.sh and call itsmagic before flashing the recovery..

Antivirus is finding a threat in the file .....

And quite rightly, if gaining root isn't a security threat I don't know what is. But as you WANT this particular security breach and you trust the author - I assume - then don't worry about it and run it anyway. This is a good security breach, not a bad one!

Sorry should have mentioned but forgot. It is impossible to delete or uninstall "Superuser" by any means at my disposal.

Please try version 1.3 and let me now if it works.

Why don't you try it and tell us? Worst it can do is fail, so you've got nothing to lose.

1.3 works....root and unroot both....my device feels laggy after rooting and busybox installation........anyone experiancing this??
