UPDATE:
The SuperOneClick rooting method outlined in this thread currently only works for Android 2.2. It does not work with Gingerbread 2.3.3.

To root 2.3.3 -
1) Install CWM (ClockworkMod Recovery): http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
2) Flash rooted ROM of your choice. Here is a stock rooted 2.3.3 ROM: http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1179748

Here's a brief guide on how to root the T-Mobile G2x. This assumes that you already have adb installed. If you do not, a quick search will point you in the right direction ;)

Note: I take no credit for rooting the G2x. I am not the developer of SuperOneClick, and this is a simplified version of a guide already posted by domi007 in the O2x forum (http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=953182). I am just posting a guide in the G2x forum because no one else has yet.

1) Install ADB driver: http://www.junefabrics.com/bin2/LGDriver.exe

2) Enable USB debugging on your phone (Settings->Applications->Development), and connect your phone to your computer via USB.

3) Run SuperOneClick: http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=803682

4) Choose the option "Root"

It's really that simple...enjoy :)

update:
jnichols959 has provided a simple solution to rooting the G2x for Mac and Linux users. We hope that keeping two separate threads will not add to forum clutter. On the contrary we think each thread will be less cluttered and therefore be more helpful to the end user.

Perfect! Thanks for posting this.

(Now I just need to find a Windows machine...)

I apologize for the Windows only solution I've posted. Since I moved in with my girlfriend, Windows has weaseled it's way back into my household. However, there was a time when I wouldn't let a Windows box come within 100 yards of my place of residence.

Ha no problem. I can just install Parallels or Fusion today. I did manage to get SuperOneClick running on my mac using Mono. However, I don't see any way to install the LG drivers executable file on the Mac, so I doubt SOC will work in this manner without those drivers... not sure if I want to risk trying it.

Hey thanks for posting this! I currently own a G2, rooted with cm7. I'm planning on picking this beast up in-store on Wednesday and I'm already itching to root it and get a custom ROM on there.

One question though, does this method achieve a permanent root? My only experience with android thus far is the G2, which required an involved process to root. Is this phone just a lot easier to root for some reason??

And then as far as recoveries and ROM's I'm assuming those haven't been released for this phone yet, right??

Yes permanent root. This G2x is not as locked down as the G2, making the process a whole lot easier. And no, no recovery yet, just stay tuned to these forums.

Received the phone today, rooted it within 5 minutes within hooking up to the computer using the superoneclick tool.

Alright good to know. Just wondering than if yall have a general idea how long it usually takes a device to get an unlock with root, I am not sure because this would be the first phone for me that I am getting close to the release date.

If you want to SIM unlock this phone, you can call t-mobile after you have purchased the phone, give them the IMEI number, and in about 2 weeks they will email you the unlock code for the phone.

    Rooted G2x V21Y with Superoneclick

Just in case people are updating to the 21Y 2.3.4 stock update or the audio improvement update for 2.3.4, Superoneclick 2.3.3.0 works. The OP only says 2.2 works, but the program has been updated. Super easy to use.

You yungins have it easy. I remember with my G1 we had to downgrade the ROM to the original flawed version by flashing an NBH file, download a Telnet app and run a bunch of commands, etc. Now it's all one click.

Do you still need to flash the bootloader on the G2X to something like HardSPL or not?

SuperOneClick does not work for our device anymore. I believe it stopped being effective after 2.2.2 froyo.
This is a guide posted by TGA_Gunman. I take no credit for anything in this post:

"First, you need to download three things:

    1) The Nvidia NvFlasher program:
    http://www.multiupload.com/RJMUQ4MLK2

    2) The Nvidia NVFlash APX drivers:
    http://djmcnz.batteryboss.org/stuff/nvmobileboot.rar

    3) The flashable root file
    root-g2x-su-2.3.6.3.zip- http://www.mediafire.com/?92qpr525ztblh8w

Install the APX drivers, then follow these instructions:

    1. Remove the battery.
    2. Plug the USB cable into your PC.
    3. Hold Volume Up and Volume Down at the same time keeping them held down.
    4. Plug the USB cable into your phone. (Keep the volume buttons held until Windows detects a new APX device.)
    5. Open Device Manager in Windows and you should see "APX Device" listed with an error icon.
    6. Right click on the APX device.
    7. Select 'Update driver software'.
    8. Select 'Browse my computer...'.
    9. Select 'Let me pick...'.
    10. Select 'Have disk'.
    11. Browse to directory you extracted the driver software to: One-Click-G2x-recovery-flasher-09-04\APX.
    12. Accept any warnings, including the big red alert (you may need to disable UAC).
    13. Now in Device Manager under 'USB Controllers' you should have an 'NVIDIA USB Boot-recovery driver for mobile devices'.
If not, uninstall the driver, reboot, rinse and repeat.
    14. When the drivers are properly installed, unplug your phone.

Now follow these instructions to flash ClockWork Recovery:
    1. Remove the battery.
    2. Goto the NvFlash directory and Double Click "OneClickRecoveryFlasher.exe".
    3. Make sure the USB cable is unplugged from your phone.
    4. Hold Volume Up and Volume Down at the same time, and keep them held down. (Keep them held until you see the "S/W Upgrade" screen on your phone after you complete step7!).
    5. Plug the USB cable into your phone.
    6. Click the "Flash ClockworkMod" button.
    7. You should see it send a bunch of files to the device and the phone screen should say "S/W Upgrade - Please wait while upgrading...". Once the files are sent and the program is finished running in the command window, you can just unplug the USB cord, even while it still says "S/W Upgrade - Please wait while upgrading...".
    8. Put the battery back in.

Once the phone has ClockWork Mod flashed, plug it into your computer and copy the flashable .zip file to your SD card.

Turn your phone off, and press the volume down and power buttons at the same time. When the LG logo changes to one with some blue streaks behind it, let go of both buttons and the phone will boot into ClockWord Mod.

Use the volume buttons to move around in the menus and the power button to select in ClockWork Mod.

    Select "wipe data/factory reset"
    Select "wipe cache partition"
    Select "install zip from sdcard"
    Select "choose zip from sdcard"
    Select "root-g2x-su-2.3.6.3.zip"

When it's done, go back in the menus until you get to "reboot system now" and select it.

Once your phone has rebooted, it will be permanently rooted!"

Do not do a data/factory reset unless you are flashing a ROM along with the root.zip package. When I used this guide I striclty wanted to be rooted on stock firmware. All I did was use the APX drivers and install CWM with NvFlash and then flash the root.zip through CWM without doing a full wipe. I did however wipe my caches before flashing the zip.
