They are actually 2x1 tiles. You can change the properties by long pressing the tile and choosing Tile Options. Not sure if that is what you were asking.

It works for me, and quite easily. Everything I need sorted into one page. Just one more screen for system analysis and a picture of my daughter which opens her apps. Every picture opens a scroll-able frame with the apps of that type.. the playstation buttons photo opens my game menu, the camera picture opens the photograpy menu and so on. tap the date opens my calendar, tap the time opens my alarm. Tap my wifes photo and i get several ways to contact her. Actually this is easier for me to manage because I dont have to remember what is on what homescreen. I also have two dock bars, which i usually hide. They have basic things, browser, market phone and so on.
