I had a MIUI ROM that could do this (it had an app that was called NS Tools), but can I do this on AOKP build 37?

Download nstools from play store. But the kernel must support BLN/BLD for it to work.

Wrong thread. Should be moved to Q&A thread.

You can use the same app with every kernel which includes backlight dimmer(BLD).
