Thanks. I was going with the wakelock counts rather than time, since some threads here suggest that is also important. But I will monitor it some more. Good to know what should be considered normal.

I've been doing lot of reading about it here already and I know the router / network is mainly to blame. I've already tried changing some settings as suggested without success. But, I have the effect also at work where I can't do that anyway. I don't think it existed as bad before jb. And my tab 7.7 on ics doesn't show the effect, while virtually all other settings are identical. So I'm still hoping the problem is at least partly caused by the firmware and a fix might be upcoming.

Just install the app 'better wiffi on/off' from the play store. This will handle your WLAN wakelocks.
Worked for me.

Thanks, that's quite a comprehensive app, certainly useful to manage the Wifi state beyond what Samsung provides. I'll be trying that.

In the past I had however found problems with turning Wifi on and off. Some accounts would perform their sync once Wifi turned on, even if it wasn't time yet according to their schedule; having Wifi turn on/off with the screen actually caused more syncs, and a really high drain (I use a lot of accounts... I'm not looking for exceptional battery life...). Because of that, it was more efficient to leave Wifi connected, even during sleep (which is also the advice by Samsung).

However, at the moment I'm unable to reproduce this effect, so maybe it's not true any more. Maybe it was only on ICS?
