Mine still stock firmware. Many xperia Z user managed to root at 230 ver. You can check at their forum. What I did root with towelroot then install the super su. Just update the super su after install. No recovery mode have install on my zr.
Try install SuperSU with older version not the one at playstore. I don't remember what version. But the old version I install I get from this forum. You can try searching at xperia. Z forum. After install then update. So far no problem to me.Yes managed to root without problem but can't update superSU in normal mode when it asks "SU binary needs to be updated, Continue?". It says
"Installation failed please reboot and try again".
Apart from that superSU works just fine, meaning that it prompts if a program is trying to access root:good::good:

I have a few (noobish)questions about this method of rooting, because the instructions are still a little sketchy for now.
- I was wondering what the point of installing recovery is, is it to get the SuperSU to work on the phone? (forgive my noobish question).
- After installing recovery do I have to set anything in recovery mode?
- Is it necessary to unlock the bootloader?
- Does this mean I can use backupTA after getting root? That would be awesome.
Doed it works on locked bootloader?
