Following the rooting process outlined only boots up your phone using CWM recovery and doesn't flash it. Just make sure that when you're done and choose to have CWM reboot your phone, if it asks you to overwrite your phone's recovery, you choose "NO".
The backup isn't called "Nandroid" in the CWM menus. You are just given options to do a backup or restore, which uses Nandroid.
I haven't used the dump process described.
...but can't I get the image of the 4.3 the phone downloaded when updating via OTA in any way?? Isn't it still stored somewhere for when I do a factory reset?
