Hello guys, I just bought a new s4 mini and I downloaded all my apps. However I see that I only got 100-200mb free ram unless I use a task killer. This uses up battery and heats up the phone when I'm using it... what can I do to free up some ram without losing it again to Google and Samsung services? It runs stock 4.2.2 jb and I don't really wanna lose the warranty because I just bought it...if you suggest flashing a custom rom then I'd prefer one that is easy to update and there is no need to re-install everything after flashing or updating.
Thanks in advance

Many people will always recommend custom roms!

About upgrading and flashing it's often the same hassle like process!
I'd really suggest you get cm11 i hope you've the lte version since cm11 is for the lte.
I wouldn't really recommend to use the nightly version even if it's the newest cause it contains bugs sometimes!
I'd recommend to use the snapshot versions and only upgrade if there is a new snapshot version, latest snapshot is m6. :good:

If you still want to stay on stock I think there are a few apps available for improvement, but I don't know any.

so I have to re install all my apps, contacts and all that even when I'm updating? Damn I'm a busy man, I got no time or patience to do all that... What's the snapshot version? Do I have to unlock my bootloader and/or risk bricking my new phone forever? And yes I think I got the lte model. I have GT-I9195

Snapshot versions are the newest more stable versions than nightlies. The most stable versions are "stable versions"!
If you've a branded phone I'm not sure if you can flash it on them. You "could" risk bricking it forever but only in a chance of maybe 99%, if you don't overclock it or else. :good:

You'll also most likely loose your warranty, especially if you not live in the EU.

Yes it's official and snapshot versions are very stable (select the snapshot link on the website or even stable if you like)

I live in Europe, got it from orange but use it with Vodafone so I don't think it's locked. What do I need to do to install a stable rom? And what's an easy way to have my apps and stuff back after upgrading? And do I need to unlock my bootloader?

Oh and about the contacts!

You can export the contacts! And then import again! Other data would be lost, BUT you could use Titanium Backup for saving apps etc. but i didn't try it yet. Titanium Backup needs a rooted phone though.

Make sure you don't have any special version like "verizon" etc. . If you've a locked bootloader I'm not sure if it's possible or not, I hope somebody else knows.

You need a custom recovery, I used TWRP from here http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=2678420, even though the cm team doesn't recommend it for their rom, they recommend CWM.

When you installed a custom recovery, follow the steps in the cm thread. Thats all

I'd also recommend to install this kernel after you've flashed cm

http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=2568479

It'll make your phone superfast and battery saving!!

I've 30% battery use a whole day with mid-range phone usage.

I recommend TWRP since it has a great menu which is easy to handle.

And I think it also has more functions!!

If you wanna stay safe, do it.

I flashed with TWRP, and had no issues!

If you decide for TWRP I'd suggest to use the one I liked you to, cause here are 2

I need to leave just now, I'm back in 1 hour :good:

You can save some RAM by put app into deep sleep when not active: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.oasisfeng.greenify

I recommended to use the donate version as you can freeze system app and has more feature. You will need to root the phone, this is a safe method without voiding your warranty if you have knox: http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
Alternatively if you have no clue: http://www.kingoapp.com/

what... is this a legit site? One click root? Have you used it? what's Knox?

read about knox here: http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=2750744

I wouldn't recommend kingoapp or vroot because xda assumed they steal data

If you like to install a good keyboard for cm11 i'd suggest you install this: http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=2708805

Make sure to use the flashable zip, not the single file below it.

Clear dalvic cache before flashing the kernel and before flashing the keyboard

There are one or a few safe root methods in the s4 mini forum here, search please. I don't know a link just now.

By the way, i think it's not 100% sure that you'll keep your warranty even if you use a safe root method. Since your phone is modified, even if it not knoxed up.

There's only one method on 'Saferoot', no other, and I already provide the link. It not for everyone if a person dones't know what they doing.

If you have no proof on Kingo stealing data, please don't spread the rumor. Personally I only don't like Kongo is because it is using the Saferoot method but they don't give the proper credit to the author, and they deny it now. I still remember one of the Kingo author was posting here on XDA.

To trust it or not it up to you, I know plenty people here on S4 mini is using it. I only recommened it becuase it a lot easier than the original Saferoot, and you seems to have no clue on what you doing. There's already plenty info we giving here, please don't expect us to spoon feeed all the time.

What do you mean by stealing data though?
