How hard is it to take apart and what tools do I need? Do you have to replace something (actuator, dome, etc) once you have it apart or is it just stuck?

Thanks

I used a screw driver that my dad used for glasses...... And my finger nails to "pop" around the edges, just stick nail in and run around until it pops off ask the way around and yeah, pretty much it just gets stuck..... Nothing needs replaced. I'll try to take mine apart later and use my old tp2 to take step by step pics to post

Ok.... It's actually so simple I just wanna help now.... Seriously just take back off, use a small phillips screw driver...... Stick finger nail between back and the phone running around edges until it pops off..... Then just look at the button... Play with it until it starts "clicking"

I'm a technician at sprint and this issue has me stumped. I've taken them apart and even replaced buttons. Still no dice.....

If I see any more ppl coming with effed up epic touches I'm gonna scream. Replacing phones is killing my numbers and repair rates. Ics is a curse to once a great phone.

Thank you for echoing what I have been saying for the past six months. From your side of the counter you can totally see the effects of ics, from my end I could not deal with the instability and unreliability of one of the better galaxy s 2's to make it to sprint. I tried the early builds, (mainly Chaulk's ics release)for a short time, mainly on weekends but could not keep as daily drivers, because I needed reliability all of the time. The are those that claim ics is OK and that the gingerbread crowd is nuts , the same folks that don't need reliable phones, to them this phone is just another tech toy to tinker with, and if it works or not, well it looks cool, and if it bricks, well let sprint worry about it, well some of us actually got the Epic because we needed a reliable device to just work all day long (without having to mess with or charge all day long), that's what I have, thanks to gingerbread and Caulk's E4GT v. 3.0 gb build with overstews ics theme. I have said it before, and I will say it again, the Samsung Epic4g Touch is most definitely a Gingerbread Device.

I have a his and her rooted Epics, for a year this month and the only time we had to go to the Sprint store was to pick up an accessory. Oh and we still have the original batteries in both phones,

I never had ICS on my E4GT and still got the power button issue. Ran stock rooted for 5 months and Calks 3.0 for last 3-4. Could it be something in Sprint implementation, or are other carriers version of our phone having the same issue?

I think what you're experiencing is an actual mechanical problem. Just the results of pressing the button a whole bunch of times during the day, when you add it up, by the week, months, its a whole lot of presses. I think the actual switch inside the phone is wearing out. Our phones are a year old this month, I have a soft touch with my phone, my power button when you press it sill gives off a click, you can feel it and you can hear it. My wife's phone has a mushy power button ,you can't feel the click or hear the click. She has a hard press when it comes to buttons or controls. (And she's only 4'10'' short, 103 lbs. ) well I guess she has strong fingers. Lol. I've owned many electronic gadgets over the years, and been mechanical/technically oriented I have fix a number of gadgets over the years so I tend to go easier on the gadgets.

Check your finger strength. Maybe is just you and the way you press or mush your button, maybe you press it allot?
One way to not over press a small fragile button (I don't think these power buttons are fragile) is to use your finger nail to press, instead of the end of your finger.

These are my theory on this.

The early eyepods suffered from this condition, especially since its used for selecting all the time.
I got this info from a friend that works at an apple repair center, just an example scenario.

I dont think its a ics related issue cause iv had phones come in with stock GB and had the same issue // myself i had to replace my device 2x times for the same issue. I was running touched by sg3 at the time and flashed back to stock gb and ics and it persisted through all roms stock and rooted. i have also taken the devices aprt and there was nothing visable (with the naked eye at least) with the power button.

I have been searching around (but haven't found anything). Does anyone have a method of disabling the button all together:confused:

The button just gets wore out and stuck. Take apart and play with it.... then it works again

Having the same issue. Took my phone apart today and made sure the button was clicking but it didn't work when I powered on the phone. Currently running cm10 Paranoid Android. Also, my phone was over heating and rebooting before I had this issue, which leads me to believe it's software related.

UPDATE: Just got done taking the phone apart. made sure that the power button was clicking, but didn't work. I haven't tried the calks format all method, but will do that next.

I was on stock sprint/samsung rom. Reboot problem started out of the blue. Hard reset. Still there. Rooted phone. Put CM9 on it. Reboot problem still there. This makes me believe it's not a software problem.

Had the same issue... Got worse and worse until finally I had the power button replaced for $65...Fixed that, but even after reflashing Calks 3.0, it reboots infrequently when rewaking, using back button, swiping screen, basically anything.

For me, it's clearly a hardware issue.

Update: sent my E4GT to mobile tech videos to get the power button replaced... Hopefully that fixes one of my phones... Next up, would be this one too as soon as I get the other one back. I paid $35 for the service and about $11 to ship with insurance.

Well I took it to a Sprint store and the tech said the button is physically fine, and worked when doing a hard reset but once the phone came back on it went back to not working again. So he thinks it's a software issue and ordered me a replacement. And my E4GT is completely stock, never rooted. Just decided to let u guys know just in case anyone else happens to have the same problem.

Last night while using my phone it suddenly rebooted itself, and when it came back on the power button no longer worked. I could use the volume buttons to wake the phone, but even that stopped working after a while. I went to sleep and let it charge overnight, and when I woke up, all was working normally. Its been normal all day until a few min ago, the phone rebooted and now once again the power button wont work. Anyone had this problem? Any suggestions, besides take it to Sprint, which I will do if it continues?

If it is a software problem which it sounds like to me I would root that thing and throw a rom on there and see if that works. Preferably Phantom Hackers Blazer rom 4.1 Pure win!

my phone did the same thing i rooted it an put caulk rom an it worked again...been working ever since

---------- Post added at 06:06 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:04 PM ----------

I have almost the same issue, mine will reboot and the battery will drop from 90% to 50 or 40% once i had 59% rebooted and drop to only 6% i changed different batts, changed roms back to stock and the same, i will take to sprint

if u are rooted u might wanna wipe the battery stats first an see if that helps.go into recovery an look for wipe its the last one ..mite save u a trip to sprint

My power button isn't working either. My phone randomly reboots and isn't usable. My buddy gave me his old Samsung Moment to use :( It's like I'm back in the stone age with this thing. No insurance on my E4GT either FML.
It's still under a year old isn't it? Take it in and spend the $35.00 for Sprint to troubleshoot and replace it under warranty.
