Generally, please try simple configurations first. Experiments with ROMs, kernels, modems etc. should wait until the phone is proven to work well.
By reviving your phone you don't solve all other problems in the world.
So keep on a secure path until you are sure to have a working phone again.
To be really sure you can try proven ROMs first, e.g. stock GB.
But please avoid fancy ROMs and kernels for this first phase.
They often introduce new problems which you may account to the brick.

CM9 has it's problems, too, but if you don't use the latest nightlies you have a chance to know of them (e.g. via the xda discussion thread about this). CM9 prioritizes functionality over fancy features. Other ROMs are often very experimental. It's also a matter of how many users test the ROM.
