So I'm a little bit confused here...upon rooting (and only rooting), do I run the risk of losing 4g? Or is that only if I install a custom ROM?
Only if you flash a WIMAX radio update. Some of which come included in some ROMs
OK good....I was worried that the loss of RSA keys would happen as a result of rooting. Thanks!
It's a little more complicated than just flashing a wimax update. Some of the official OTA updates include wimax img updates. Some custom roms include these official OTA updates in an all-in-one PC36IMG.zip update. These I have not seen cause loss of RSA keys.
The problem, I have heard, is flashing a nandroid backup from another phone, a wimax image pulled from another phones nandroid backup, or a bad wimax image update.
Technically, Wimax doesn't penetrate buildings and the like the same way normal cell service does, not because the coverage isn't saturated (although I'm sure that plays a part) but because the frequency of the transmission is very high by comparison. High frequency signals penetrate much more poorly than low frequency signals, even by just a few mhz. Also, the conductivity of the material the signal is passing through has a pronounced effect as well. I can have full 4g reception walking down the street, but if I duck into a restaurant, I may have 1 bar, if at all.
I'm a hardcore geek at heart, so forgive me for stressing over minute technical BS. Its one bit of inconsequential info that makes no difference to the OP, but I couldn't help but point it out.
In any case, thank you for posting all the info like this! When I was first delving into android, a resource like this would have helped me out tremendously. Many props
sekigah84,
I stumbled upon these if you wanted to add them to the OP, they are the different recovery icons and what they are for.
The green one is the installing icon, it will show it while it is flashing something.
The one with the question mark is the WTF icon, it will show that if it gets a bad auto update command or a bad update package.
The Last one I'm guessing you'll see if there is an error within the recovery itself, I've never seen it be used before
Okay, I've been on xda for a while and never flashed a rom when I had my touch pro 2. Now, I have an EVO (not rooted) and bought an iPad (wifi only) for the wife and me for Christmas. I want to be able to tether wirelessly using my EVO without having to fork over $30/month to Sprint for Hotspot.
I have the most recent OTA update (3.70.651.1), 2.15.00.11.19 radio, and 0003 hardware version. I've checked a few sites and there seems to be conflicting information as to whether I could root after receiving this update. Please let me know if this is true. If not, please recommend a ROM. Overall, I like the stock ROM. I really just want to be able to tether wirelessly. Also, keeping the Blockbuster app would be nice too.
Thanks in advance!
Heya, I just wrote up a little How-To for manually updating PRL. The threads get buried pretty fast in here...Thought you might want to add it to the first post.
[How To] Manually Update PRL
Will do. Since this is a pretty uncommon I didn't bother putting it on. Its the PRI that is a bigger pain. Added just incase lol.
There are two different root methods posted. Both of them cover HBOOT versions of 2.02, 2.10. They both cover Hardware Versions of 0001-0004. Read the instructions on those pages carefully and if it does not work, always flash back to stock with the STOCK non-rooted RUU and try again. These should also root 3.70 versions as they are most likely 2.10 HBOOT. So try those two methods. I am NOT sure if Unrevoked has been updated for 3.70 and 2.10 HBOOT so keep that in mind.
As for Stock ROMs. Also look at my original post.
is this info up to date?? cause i got 2.3.3 on my evo 4g but i'm trying to root..
