In general Defender is not waterproof but rather splash proof. Which phone do you have? For example, Note 2 version of Defender gets dust and all sorts of crap under its plastic screen protector just by carrying it in your pocket. You would never want to drop it in the water. But if you have S3 or S4 and use Seidio OBEX case - that sucker is water/sand and every other element proof. Defender - is tough on drop protection and water splash, just a drizzling rain. But if you take it to the beach and sand or water gets in there - you will be screwed man. On a short term notice, just use one of the ziplock bags. Otherwise, get one of those waterproof bag-cases off amazon or ebay or sites like dx.com or tvc-mall.com where its a vinyl plastic pocket that seals tight and you can touch screen through.
Like something I reviewed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2364060
- just keep in mind, those waterproof cases designed for either naked phone or with a thin tpu case (which I recommend to have on, just in case if you drop the bag).
