succesful upgrade

hi all,
I managed to successfully install ice cream sandwich.
I upgraded from cm7.2 build of mirage.
ics is running flawlessly.
i wiped system partition then data partition and finally cache.
after that i installed ics update.
let it boot once completely.
again went in to recovery, flashed gapps provided by newellj79
http://db.tt/ujcVWK1U

and to be on safer side, wiped dalvik and now I am happily using tablet running ics.

I love this community and its awesome.

feeling so happy.:D

ICS on Nook is butter smooth!

Compliments and many thanks to Dalingrin, Fat__Tire and any other members of the team.
Even this alpha version of ICS is running like a dream on my Nook. :D
I am running it of an SD card. I had a small problem with the market downloading at only 1kb/s. Turned out that changing the SD card for another cured this and improved overall responsiveness.
Looking forward to the next version!

Great, I didn't want to contaminate the official thread, so will report a couple bugs I found.

When running dolphin browser HD, it gets in some sort of memory leak and slows down the device, so I need to reboot the NC to solve it.

thanks guys for all your hard work.

Looks great. Great work devs! Can't wait to try this on my Nook color. Going to wait until the first Beta though (Everything works on CM7 so no real need to upgrade, just want ICS to have ICS :D )

Wanted to say thanks to the devs for all the hard work and that it is appreciated.

The lack of sound and most video playback means that this isn't really a daily driver, but it is a very nice version for those looking for media-light (e.g., browser, e-reader, productivity app) functionality. If you're just curious about how ICS runs and what it feels like, and you have the time and resources, I heartily suggest trying it out. You don't even have to blow away your stock install to do it, since you can use verygreen's CM7 uSD install method. From start to finish--including download time for the ROM and GApps, formatting a spare uSD, the verygreen install, the ICS install and first run, and the GApps install--it took maybe 40 minutes and I had everything up and running. It's been as stable or even moreso than the HC build (thanks to having full code rather than SDK), and it looks like the overclocking from dalingrin's Nook Tweaks app helps with some speed issues. I only have a couple other apps installed for right now, and the only real problem I have is that Kindle seems to think that it's installed on a phone, and therefore I only get one or two paragraphs of text on the smallest font. Presumably this is related to a screen density setting, but web and OS text (mmmm...Roboto) is just fine.

Anyway, just my $0.02, from someone who's enjoying messing around with it in anticipation for a Galaxy Nexus.

I have that problem with CM7.1 and similar problem with the stock rom. PArt of the problem with these things is you don't have to turn them off. Eventually there are performance issues that creep up and you have to reboot to fix.

At my last job doing IT support for 45 people, the number of people that just logged off their computers drove me nuts. After a while they had to be shut down, I reccomended on the weekends. I recently discovered that sometimes not only do you have to shut computers down, but some errors will continue untill you shut down and unplug the computer. Wake on lan and USB means something has to be waiting for something to happen. I do wonder if this also happens with some of the "Bricked" nooks where the error won't go away until you let the battery die then plug it back in.

Check out http://xdaforums.com/showpost.php?p=12240928&postcount=1.

  • Download generic-sdcard-v1.3.img.gz
  • Ungzip it, then write it to an SD card (using dd or WinImage)
  • Download and copy the image from http://xdaforums.com/showpost.php?p=19868762&postcount=2 onto "boot" partition.
  • Be sure to add the prefix "update-cm-" to the name (i.e. "update-cm-9.0-0-encore-emmc-sneakpeek1-fullofbugs.zip")
  • Turn off NookColor, Insert SD and bootup. Once it completes, it will turn-off
  • Turn NookColor back on and wait for the initial boot to complete (this will take a few min / you'll see the shiny animation)
  • And you're all done :)

Now, if you want the gapps (of course :) ...
  • Completely turn off/ power-down NookColor, remove SD card.
  • Download http://xdaforums.com/showpost.php?p=20141071&postcount=264 or the "gapps-small" and copy the ZIP to "boot" on the SD card.
  • Be sure to add the prefix "gapps-gb-" to the name (i.e. "gapps-gb-ics-4.0.1-small.zip")
  • Insert SD into (powered-off) NookColor
  • Enter VeryGreen-SD-Recovery (Hold the N button, Press+Hold the POWER button until the logo appears. Let go op power, then press and hold it again until "Booting into Recovery" appears.) -- Sounds complex, but it's pretty easy.
  • Once it completes, it will turn off, turn it back on and you're all done :)

iv been running this alpha since it was posted i got everything working very stable and all, but i have had a problem with the stock browser.

i like the stock browser better than dolphin at this point but after using it for a while it will freeze up and get stuck i cant do anything, iv cleared the cache and all that. it seems to be fine after that but it keeps freezing after use. the lack of sound is just a minor inconvenience for me no big deal i love the tablet software GB just didnt make the nook complete compared to this alpha

Thank you fr the details. I got it to work once and only once. But gapps had the NFC. Updated GAPPS. but could not get it to flash. Not sure what I am doing wrong. it looks like it is falshing but no apps. I tried many times even re-formatted SD and tried the steps again. One thing I noticed is SD-recovery, my screen blink the first time and it doesn't show "Loading" until second push of Power, then it shows "boot into recovery". Even once I ended up with a full BOOT screen. Never seen before. Any recommendations?

Try starting over, and use the modified GApps from this post.

Perfect it worked!!. FYI, I found the best to get into recovery, and I am not patient to keep an eye pn power button, is to hold "N", press Power until screen blink, let go of Power, keep holding the "N". Then you have a menu to choose boot into SD and choose Revovery. Thank you. BTW, this thing is pretty smooth for an alpha. I have ICS on my Nexus S as well. Love ICS.

I just got ICS running on my Nook yesterday. I primarily use the tablet as a traveling portfolio of my photography work (using the JustPictures app).

I followed the directions here: http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1030227, first installing CM7 and gingerbread. It's not a necessary pre-step, but I wanted to do a walkthrough first on something tried and tested.

Then, I followed the same workflow, but used the CM9 from this post http://xdaforums.com/showpost.php?p=19868762&postcount=2 and the gapps mentioned in this post http://xdaforums.com/showpost.php?p=20141071&postcount=264

It worked like a charm. I'm really happy with the results. I was running honeycomb (pre-release 4) earlier, which kept crashing and whatnot all the time. For a first "alpha" release, this is really smooth and well put together.

Thanks again to all those that worked on putting this together.

In other news, I'm trying to get Android/ICS to build from source, but I'm running into a few troubles with the configuration. Only 9 more posts and then I can get my questions onto the developer boards ;).

Cheers

I think your first line mostly summed it up, but heck I'll take a couple of minutes to respond.. responses are inline in bold.

    Hi Guys -

I want to start out by acknowledging that I realize that no one owes me anything. I bought a Nook because I thought it would be fun to see just what could be done with Android on a somewhat different device. No one held a gun to my head and I may have misconstrued what the goals of this community were. I own my own disappointment and am not blaming anyone else.

I was amazed by the Gingerbread ROMs that were initially available, and it seemd to me that in no time we would have updated (read Honeycomb, ICS, and JB) Roms that would continue to amaze

It has taken OEMs (HTC/Samsung) in the region of 6-9 months to update some devices from GB to ICS, so "in no time" wasn't really going to happen when we work on this in our free time for fun. ICS was a huge overhaul and required a lot of changes - some of which we still don't have source code that we can use (such as hw accel/omx on ICS).

I did not think that Honeycomb should have been abandoned when ICS was still a glimmer in the eyes of its developer parents, and I do not think that ICS should be abandoned either now. I am totally confused by the lack of progress in bringing these later ROM to the state where GB was a year ago. The only thing I can think of is that Android is so much of a moving target that no one can spend the time necessary and that the changes to Android in moving from GB to ICS to JB have actually made it harder to adapt the OS to the hardware bits of the Nook Color. This, if true, is a major disappointment in the development of Android.

Honeycomb wasn't even started, so it wasn't abandoned. deeper-blue did some great work porting from the SDK but at best it was a "proof-of-concept" - honeycomb was not open source and therefore it was never really worked on. We also haven't abandoned ICS, while working on JB we're still pushing relevant fixes to ICS so that people can continue to get the best ICS experience we can offer (https://github.com/fat-tire/android_device_bn_encore/commits/ics)

In my mind, the philosophy of open source software is to make adaption and adoption easier, not harder; and to celebrate those developers who try to do so, rather than keeping them in the dark and withholding necessary information and code from them.

I'm not sure who you're referring to in terms of keeping people in the dark? All our work has been open in the nookcolor chan on IRC or in the dev thread here on xda.

My initial reaction, when faced with such disappointment was to set up a Linux box (I chose Knoppix poor man's install for personal reasons) and to download andbot and the sources. I have gotten through the initial glitches and believe I have the full set of sources, the open and proprietary ones. Now it seems that the java runtime available in Knoppix is not appropriate (1.6.0 vs SE 1.6.0). I am running down the errors in the building in brunch to see if I can get around the problems. Java SE when downloaded from Debian and reinstalled, says that I already have the proper version.

    Knoppix? Really?

I am willing to spend some time at this to get it working, but my dream of a more stable ICS or JB seems to be receding into the mists.

Of all the ROMs I have tried (and I've tried most of them) I think that (believe it or not) Honeycomb gave the best balance of tablet loveliness and usability. So I'm afraid I am currently asea.

I think you're mostly alone there..

I guess I will buy a Nexus 7 so that my wife doesn't have to keep asking me why my tablet doesn't work. It just seems like admitting defeat.

Thanks to all who have spent countless hours and who are probably just as frustrated as I am. Sorry for the rant.

Most of us aren't frustrated, we do this for fun to see what we can bring to this device, knowing it's a challenge and maybe never going to be perfect. If you want a fully functional tablet today - then I would also recommend the Nexus7 as being the device for you.

Just in case you missed it, we posted our first Alpha build last night over in the development forum: http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1941247

    ;)

Fattire put that line in the build.prop for everybody last night (via the awesomizer, LOL). What is it? Is he pulling our chain again?

Yes, this was a joke... my answer to all the bogus "change such and such and the NC will be 3x faster"... my point being that there's a placebo effect. We did play around though with some of the suggested improvements in IRC doing all kinds of tests and not finding any real difference. Also looked at source and most of them didn't do anything at all in ICS.

So next time someone asks for some unproven change to build.prop you can just tell them it's already included and covered by the ro.magic.optimization property ;) If that doesn't work I'll have to turn on ro.placebo.enhancements=true...

I have been trying to use the CWM 5.5.0.4 taken from Sam's server in recoveries. It keeps giving me recovery.fstab errors for cache saying NULL is not a proper option and then only backs up /boot. Is there a working version somewhere? Fattires original post used Megaupload and is dead.

Here's a flashable zip for CWM 5.5.0.4 to EMMC. Built this morning for you. :D

This should correct the NULL mount point errors. I haven't tested it myself since I run off SD, but it should flash and work properly.

**Disclaimer: Do so at your own risk, I am not responsible for ... blah, blah, blah.... you all should know the rest. :p "
