I'm trying to update my friends phone to stock ics from 2.3.6 but I keep having an error downloading the update on kies. Could I just use this method instead? It's basically the same thing, right?

Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using xda app-developers app

UVKL1 is not the stock ICS rom for the T989,
UVLE1 is. That guide is also out of date since it hasn't been updated since April.

Your stupid. Why is it out of date? It still works. If you restore to ICS it wouldn't be stock...so shut your pie hole dork.

And it is the original restore GUIDE.

that was not the original author, he had a link post that said this is the original author lol took me to,
http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1391174

Well he is the original author of the "HOW TO RESTORE" guide moron. He gave credit to the file source. The link you referred to doesn't tell you a thing about how to perform the restoration. Scrotum.

There is this Windows utility that is used to check the Samsung servers for OTA updates. Here is a link: http://fus.nanzen.se/
Download it, install it and run it. It will ask for a whole bunch of stuff for your phone. Here is everything you need to paste into the dialog:

SGH-T989D
Product Code: SGH-T989ZKDTLS
HIDSWVER: T989DTLKJ3/T989DTLKJ3/T989DTLKJ3/T989DTLKJ3

Use it to get the TLLE tar from the server. It will be called something like .tar.md5: it's okay, don't rename it. Just leave it as it is.

[10-foot high red letters]Then start ODIN and flash that as per the instructions in the OP. Don't use a PIT file, even if your copy of ODIN comes with one. Don't choose "Restore partitions", however tempting it might be to do so. Follow the instructions exactly, or you will have to send your phone in for repair! Been there, done that, and it's not fun.[/10-foot high red letters]

After this is done, start the phone, go to Settings and choose Factory Reset, as the ODIN tar does not wipe the data partition (and you absolutely have to wipe it).

Congrats, you are back to stock and noone will ever know your phone was ever running anything but stock.

Hope this helps.

Shut everything else down on your computer, change your sync cable with one you absolutely know works (like the one that came with your phone, or one that comes with a Blackberry phone), and try again.

Do this while your laptop is on a power supply, and your phone is charged full. Just minimizing the probability of a power disruption to leave you with an expensive paperweight.

You are in luck: had it failed a bit earlier, your phone would have been a paperweight. By the way, it is normal for your phone to appear frozen for a while during a firmware recovery: there is this big file and it has to be fed to the phone SLOOOOOOOOWLY. Let it do its thing.

Had rooted 4.0.3 ICS stock on my T989.
Decided to go back to 2.3.6. Here is what I did:

Booted phone to CWM (which was installed at the time of flashing ICS)
Wiped Cache, Dalvik and Fixed Permissions
Downloaded T989UVLDE ROM from HERE
Flashed it using ODIN.
Done with TM Stock in place.

To root 2.3.6 I continued with:
Flashed CWM again using ODIN.
Installed superuser.
Done.

Worked like a charm. Thanks guys!
:good:

Thanks for the reply. I downloaded the software and when trying to download to download the firmware it gives an error message saying that "Unhandled exception has occurred in your application". I'm not sure if that has got something to do with my laptop!

Enjoy. I used it to recover my own phones a while back.

Please get it quickly and let me know so that I know I can remove it.

Could you please explain how this file is different with the stock ROM?

What do you mean? This is the stock ROM. Which stock ROM are you referring to?

This is the authentic MD5-signed Samsung ROM for the SGH-T989D sold by TELUS. This is the very file Kies will flash for you if you try to upgrade a stock GB SGH-T989D phone with it and this is the very file all new SGH-T989D sold by TELUS ship with. I merely extracted it from the site Kies checks and used ODIN to flash it instead. I had to bring my phones back to 100% stock and this was the way to do it, Kies will not flash a phone that has been rooted or flashed with a custom ROM. By the way, this will not flash from recovery.

This file is different from the ODIN file for T-Mobile someone else posted a while back because it is for a different carrier: it lacks some T-Mobile specific features like Wifi calling, and also has very little bloat. TELUS appears to favour relatively pristine ROMs. It is also different from the versions Mr. X distributes, as his are rooted, altered for easier tweaking, and repackaged for flashing from recovery.

You probably can, but that won't be your device's stock. :) It should work.

I explained how I got this file up above. You can use a very similar trick to get the T-Mobile stock. The exact values to input for your device should be on the CheckFUS website there. Or you can just get it from the link in the OP.

This will remove superuser along with everything else you want and don't want to keep.

THIS IS FOR SGH-T989 (T-MOBILE) ONLY!

    This will restore to T-Mobile 2.3.6 ULKL1.

This guide is for those who screwed up a flash, need to return their phone, are selling their phone, or just want that stock new phone feeling again.

    Prerequisites:
    1) ODIN
    2) USB Drivers

If you need your data backed up first, backup personal data with Kies and Application Data with Titanium Backup.

    Steps:
    1) Download THIS file and extract it. (Password is 'sampro.pl') --Source HERE.
    2) Power off your phone and remove the battery. Re-insert the battery after a few seconds.
    3) Plug the USB cable into your computer, without plugging it into your phone.
    4) Hold VOL UP + VOL DOWN while plugging in the USB cable to your phone. Stop holding with 'Warning' appears.
    5) Press Volume UP and start ODIN (Run as Admin on Vista and 7, just to be safe)
    6) Click PDA and locate the MD5 file extracted earlier.
    7) Press 'Start' and be patient. It will take a few minutes because it is a large file.
    8) Unplug your phone after it has completed and rebooted twice.

Now everything is 100% stock! Kernel, System, Bootloader, and Modem are stock.

If you're going to sell the phone, or just return it, I advise you to do the following:
    1) Go to Settings > Privacy > Factory Data Reset
    2) Check Format USB Storage
    3) Press 'Reset Phone'
    4) Press 'Erase Everything'
This will erase EVERYTHING on your phone including your SD Card (External + Internal)

If you happen to have a bootloop, perform the following:
    1) Boot into recovery (Power on phone while holding VOL UP and VOL DOWN)
    2) Wipe Data, Cache, and Dalvik
    3) Reboot System

If this helped you save your phone, please press 'Thanks'
And if you want to, DONATE (You aren't required to, it's just HIGHLY appreciated.)
