update:
I got my first annimation complete but it looks like crap. I'll have to keep messing with it to optimize it and make it look good. Then I need to figure out the sound part. Making slow progress. I think eveyone will like this one though.

EDIT - One thing I've notice when you are doing the batch conversion if you start your file name number with #1, example: "bootani1.jpg, bootani2.jpg etc, and you have more than 100 images even when sorting by acending it will put bootani2.jpg before the bootani200.jpg file (makes sense the way Windows sorts). The work around is to start your file name numbers with 100 in Irfanview and go from there. This is just an extra step in the Irfanview program and not that big of a deal. Use Batch rename - options - starting counter and start with 100 increment by 1. This way makes it easy to just move your files into your part folders and it won't screw up the order so image#2 shows up in the middle of the animation.

I've attached one version of what I've been working on. I had to rotate it to a landscape view because it just didn't look right the other way. I plucked the video off of youtube and will have to figure out how to adjust the aspect ratio of videos etc. to fit our screen without distorting. Hope you like it. I named the file ATT_bootanimation.zip because that's what my phone uses. Just rename it to whatever your phone needs. It's a little big and I'm working on getting the size smaller without losing clarity.
Remember to rw-r-r the permissions.
Enjoy!!!!

If I wanted to display a picture, just one, what would I need to write in the desc.txt?

Would be the proper syntax if it let's you do that. The 10 is fps, so id think it could be anything..but there might be a high low fps limit. Part1 is the name of the folder that contains the image

Might be better to use the same image multiple times? I've never done one with one image

Tried that, no go. Black screen. Do the dimensions have to match those of the picture I'm using?

The dimensions should be the dimensions of the screen resolution. It should make the images the same resolution, but I always make the images match the phone resolution. Make sure the image(s) are going in with store compression

Still no luck. What do the two zeros denote?

Play it infinite times and pause for 0 seconds between.

I always do my animations with one image in the last folder setup like that..

Did you try changing 10 FPS to 1 fPS since there's only one frame?

Ok..but I don't think it'll matter cause Luke I said mine usually run between 10-15 fps with one image in the last folder and they play fine.

OK, I was able to get to it and make it work. Here is what my desc.txt file looks like (ignore the top line as it is a boot annimation I'm working on and it not correct for our device at this time):
304 540 30
p 100 0 part0

I just made the picture loop 100 times. You can play with the loop total if you want but the picture stayed onscreen until I got the Android is updating message. Also make sure if you are manually putting the .txt file in the zip file you use the storage compression option and also remember to change the permissions to rw-r-r.

I've created a few boot animations making the zip file manually but I've found the Boot Annimation Factory easier. Now if I can only get sound to work.

I've added the file to this post that works on my phone - remember to change permissions and the image will be small since it's the resolution as stated above.

Let's take advantage of this gorgeous screen and throw together some boot animations. Here are a few of my others that I've converted for our 540X960 display. The first thing you'll need to do is figure out where you're boot animation is and what it's called. You can figure this out a couple of ways, the easiest is just browsing the .zip of your ROM. You can also download a File Browser with root permission and look for it from your phone (you'll need a root file browser later anyway, I like Root Browser - http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1338582) A lot of the ROMs that are floating around right now, based on an ATT build anyway, are going to be located at /system/customize/resource/ and will be called ATT_bootanimation.zip - note: there will probably be a bootanimation.zip here too. If so, that's OK. Leave it alone - If you don't have an ATT_bootanimation.zip, but only a bootanimation.zip, that's it. If it's not there, check /data/local/ for bootanimation.zip. It could be in a number of places, if you have trouble, let me know what ROM you're running and I'll take a look. Once you've found the location and name of your bootanimation, you'll need to download your new boot animation, and rename it to exactly what your current animation is called. Now it's probably a good idea to back up your current animation just in case something goes wrong, and the easiest way to do that is to browse to it via your File Browser, and rename it with a .bak extension at the end. Now copy/paste the new bootanimation (already renamed) to this directory. Now long press the bootanimation and choose Permissions. Set permissions to RW/R/R. Reboot and Enjoy the animation. IF your bootanimation is called ATT_bootanimation.zip and it's located at /system/customize/resource/, you can download the "Flashable" zip at the end of this, and using 7zip (http://www.7-zip.org/download.html), you can add the downloaded bootanimation (which you've already renamed to ATT_bootanimation) to system/customize/resource/ in the .zip, delete the "placeholder" file, put it on your SD, then flash through recovery. DO NOT FLASH THE "Flashable.zip" BY ITSELF. THERE'S NOTHING IN IT TO FLASH. ADD YOUR ANIMATION TO /system/customize/resource/ FIRST (If this is not where your bootanimation is located and you want a flashable .zip, let me know where the bootanimation is located and what it's called, and I'll throw one together for you). Taking requests... (youtube videos, animated .gifs, or other bootanimations, please. I am NO graphic artist) If anyone wants to know how to make your own, I put together a how to for a fellow Inspire user, with links to the softwares I use. Only difference would be anywhere you see 480 or 800 you would need to substitute for 540 and 960 respectively.

Thanks for the guide! I will read over this. I teach elementary school so I will get a break this summer and maybe I can create some to share with the community!

    I didn't forget about you..ok maybe I forgot. Lol..ill do this tomorrow

home...i need help getting boot sounds to work...i wanna make some custom ones but im haveing probs getting the sound to play ...i have edit the default xml file but to no avail pm me as i would like to do this on my own but i need a lil help

Haven't played much with boot sounds. Ran into some problems when the inspire started getting ics builds and haven't looked too closely since. Sounds like you might have gotten further than I've dug. I'll look a little deeper when I get some time...if I find anything ill let you know

I modified the ATT Animation and inverted all the colors so it's on a black background. It looks a lot better than the stock one imo. Assuming your ATT_bootanimation is located in system/customize/resource/ATT_bootanimation.zip, you can flash the zip in recovery. I also included the original in case you want to go back to stock. Note I've only tried this on a Vivid with wcx rom, not liable if it doesn't work.

Huge thanks to homeslice976 for helping me figure out how to get it working and the flashable zip file.

ah that's pretty cool. You want it to just keep looping, loop twice then stay on the last frame, other ideas?

Here it is looping until boot. If you're boot animation is located at system/customize/resource, you can use this flashable:
    http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?tsrcdtpqp3r384r

If it's located somewhere else, here's the raw animation, follow the steps in the OP:

Thanks! Like I said, no rush. I just appreciate the fact that you would take the time to make it!

_calvinjohnson boot animation has been added to the folder with the rest. Here's a direct link http://www.mediafire.com/?s63tcwjqm10rb4s

Instructions in the first post still apply. Rename it to ATT_bootanimation.zip (or whatever your current animation is called), put in in the folder where your current bootanimation is, change permissions to match the other files in the folder, reboot. If your bootanimation is located at system/customize/resource/, then you can download flashable.zip from the first post, put ATT_bootanimation in system/customize/resource/ using WinRAR with store compression, flash in recovery.
