ff is great, love the webview

is there any way to store the settings? I don't want to lose all entries in case of a crash.

Sure, I can add an option to export your configuration to the SD card so it will be there if you reinstall the app, or you could even take it with you if you switched phones.

In some cases when you come back to unread page, the list is empty, but really not so. Could be useful to have a refresh button to use in this situation.

I'm sure I posted a reply to this thread via FF, and it's not here when I come back.

Anyway, per the comments above, I am also getting blank pages, both on the list of subscribed topics, and within forum thread pages. On the thread, this could be the first page you get when you select the thread, or a subsequent page after tapping next/prev. Sometimes I can get it by doing next/prev.

Also, I was viewing a thread, switched to another app, and when I switched back the page was clear.

1.Blank pages means its refreshing background would love if you add refreshing or loading text
2. Ability to jump from thread to that device thread (as per xda)
3. Ability to subscribe device forums

I'm just following the thread, because tapatalk is getting more and more problems.
Just to say, I tried yesterday Forum Friend, and I couldn't login on xda. Strange because everybody seems to be able to...
I have to try again!

ps: It's not easy to add the forums web adresses on smartphones, any others ways to do it?

I've just had contact from the owner of a forum, and they've been dealing with a number of report-to-mod complaints re the default sig which is added to every post (as above).

I know I can remove it in my settings, but this forum owner's first experience of FF has been complaints and an overall negative experience.

I'm apparently just the first user to try this on his forum. Imagine if the mods were dealing with 50 users all trying out FF, and every one having to update their settings. If I was in his shoes, I might start looking for ways to block FF, while leaving Tt access in place (if that's even technically possible). Running a forum is enough hassle without this sort of thing adding to the workload.

I understand the desire to grow the user base by word of mouth, but is there anything we can do about this?

cheers, Martin

I guess the forum users aren't accustomed to smartphone users?
A lot of apps do that, email apps, SMS apps, all sorts of things.

To repeatedly complain to the mods about it is a bit over the top.

Doesn't TT do the same by default?

The forum has over a million posts, and I can't remember any post on that forum with a "posted from Tapatalk" sig.

You have to realise that every forum will attract a bunch of people with similar attitudes, and if this happens to annoy that community, then it just does. As FF tries to improve its market share, accommodating this might be something that helps.

(I do wonder whether it's partly the Forum Fiend app name, which is fine in isolation / makes it stand out in the app store, but it can be quite jarring when it interrupts some intense discussion - Forum Fiend, Forum Fiend... The bright colour also doesn't help - a subtle grey might be somewhat better.)

BTW, this is a technical community discussing spaceflight, so they're a tech-savvy bunch.

Cheers, Martin

TBH they sound a little too picky... No offense to anybody. But I'm pretty sure that most forums allow the turning of the TT signatures off if I remember correctly. All I think that needs to be done is that FF needs to be able to follow that setting to turn off the signatures... But OP could enlighten you more on this subject probably more than I can.

I'm an engineer myself, and a lot of my upper management use BBs (company standard), so every email they send has a BB tag (or a customized sig, thinks like electronic leash, or ball and chain). I get lots of email from outside firms with similar tags, naming the app, device, and.or carrier.

That includes several NASA engineers at Marshal.

So I'm with mp3deviant721, they sound bit picky (and prissy).

That said, I'd turn it off just because I don't personally like it. But I'm not going to complain about those that are different.
I learned long ago not to fight that sort of thing. It's like long signatures or the top vs bottom post wars.
We aren't on 2400 baud modems anymore.

Although Tapatalk's always had its own default signature, all things considered, it's easily among the app's least offensive features. That said, FF's would possibly encounter less opposition if it wasn't such a deliberately eye-catching colored bold font. But either way.

If that's correct, then it would appear that FF is ignoring the Tapatalk config for disabling signatures.

If FF could honour that request from the forum, it should completely resolve this issue.

The forum owner can either:-

* ignore the extra hassle of report-to-mod re these sigs

* run a campaign to persuade people not to be bothered by the sig

* run a campaign persuading people not to use FF

* investigate whether it's possible to block FF on his forum.

So I am the developer of a little known Tapatalk alternative forum reader called Forum Fiend. The app has come a long way since I released it last fall. The reason for my post is that I have noticed XDA is the #3 site accessed through Forum Fiend, so there might be a couple of users around here. Was wondering if people could share their issues with the app or provide feedback on how to make it better. My goal is to provide a fully functional and superior forum browsing experience vs Tapatalk.

Thanks in advance for your input!

    Moving to Open Source

Just a heads up to everyone here who is interested in Forum Fiend. There are some changes coming soon to the project that you should be aware of, including transitioning the app to an open source model. See my blog for info on this:

    http://blog.forumfiend.net/2015/02/forum-fiend-to-go-open-source.html

    On what grounds?
Can you post the letter on your blog or forum?

As promised, I have posted the letter they have sent me on my blog:

I've just posted an update to Forum Fiend that includes some bug fixes and a few more of your suggestions. Changes include:

    • Non-Tapatalk forums can now be added to the app. If you enter a URL that does not work with Tapa, the app will ask if you want to use the forum in a WebView instead.
    • Added a post preview option to the new posts screen. Also added a select all, and a clear all feature. Find them by pressing the menu button on the new post screen.
    • Various other bug fixes and layout updates

There is a full changelog within the app. I still have more of your suggestions to implement, so keep them coming. I will try to post new updates on a weekly basis (sooner if there are major bugs found). I think the next items on my list will be to add support for the xenforo conversation-style inbox system, and the ability to select which page is the default start page for each forum (index, inbox, subscriptions, etc). From there I will move on down the list of suggestions until I get the app right. Thanks again for your suggestions and support!

Just got my cease and desist letter from Tapatalk, Inc. I'll probably comply vs trying to fight it. Its been a good run though .
